Free landowner elk permit process OK'd, deadline to apply moved back to June 1

Author: Montana BHA
Citing a short timeline for notifying participants, the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission on Tuesday approved a deadline change and a new process for landowners to apply for free either-sex elk tags in return for providing public hunting access. The rule change to a June 1 deadline only applies to this year, the commission decided at its monthly meeting in Helena. Next year April 15 to May 15 would be the application period. Before the third year, FWP is hoping to have a new proposal to ...

Stevens Point Students Collaborate on Wetland Restoration Efforts

Authored by Jeffrey Edwards and edited by Brendan Woodall (U.S. FWS) The steam of freshly brewed coffee slowly rising from the BHA Stanley mug mimicked that of a freshly stoked campfire in the backcountry as we sat awaiting the arrival of our crew in the crisp Wisconsin air. Stoke the fire. A statement I’ve heard Mr. Land Tawney repeat countless times, but it still has a way of seeping deep into my soul and reverberates with every inch of my being. Every time I apply for a grant through S. ...

AFI Members Find Community and More

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Photo: Josh Bent BY TREVOR HUBBS BHA’s Armed Forces Initiative is a group of North American veterans from all branches of service who understand the power our land has. Whether it’s Coastal Carolina swamps, a logging road five miles into the Maine hardwoods or a misty mountain view in western Alberta, AFI members know there is something special to these places. They have walked across the chasm of leaving the service and through our public lands have come out the other side. The military is ...

WY Update: Elk Feedgrounds

Since October 2021, Jackson-area chapter leadership team member Liz Lynch has been participating in the Wyoming Game & Fish Department (WGFD) process for receiving public input regarding the future of elk feedgrounds in western Wyoming. Liz has represented Wyoming BHA in the non-governmental organization (NGO) stakeholder group.  The “shared learning” phase, which involved weekly presentations and Q&A sessions, ran from early November 2021 to the end of January 2022. You can revisit the ...

How to Make Tallow

Author: Megan Mclean
Tallow is rendered animal fat and it is great for baking, soap making, frying and can be used in any number of beauty products such as beard oil, hair conditioner, lotion, or lip balm. It is really a gold mine if you know how to use it, and it makes use of a part of the animal that may otherwise get discarded during processing. I like the idea of giving use to as much of the animal as I can, and it reminds me that the product will have an echo of the place it was harvested. To start, you ...

FWP outlines proposed new policy for free landowner elk tags

Author: Montana BHA
New guidelines and timelines for Montana landowners to apply for a free either-sex elk hunting tag will go before the Fish and Wildlife Commission for approval on April 19. Prior to that, the commission is holding a work session to discuss the program on April 18 at 3 p.m. The change in the agreements, known commonly as 454s because they were created by House Bill 454, was motivated by a controversial approach the Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks took last year. For decades, only a ...

Montana BHA Responds to '454' Program Changes

We have long encouraged FWP to improve the 454 agreements, including most recently at March’s EQC meeting and in an oped published by one of our board members, Jake Schwaller. Some of our suggestions included a cap on these agreements (which are currently unlimited) and to move up the application process to time these with the existing landowner permit allocations and draws. Yesterday, FWP sent a press release announcing that our concerns are being heard; they are planning to take two big ...

Senate Bill Would Greenlight Sale of Public Lands Out of Public Hands

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), joined by his colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and John Barrasso (R-WY), announced in early April the introduction of the HOUSES Act (S. 4062), legislation that would permit state or local governments to buy public lands on the cheap, ostensibly to address diminished housing supply and rising housing costs.  Sen. Lee and the bill’s other sponsors claim that S. 4062 would alleviate the housing crisis. However, it is similar to legislation that Sen. Lee floated back in ...
