Safe Passage 97 Update

Just north of Riverside Washington, over 300 mule deer per year are killed in vehicle strikes along a 12 mile stretch of Highway 97. Thanks in part to the Washington Chapter of BHA, that number is falling and soon to be lower yet. In 2018, the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers donated $10,000 to support the Safe Passage 97 campaign led by Conservation Northwest and the Mule Deer Foundation. Our donation helped to raise money for the first of seven wildlife undercrossings ...

Feather River Closure Lifted in California

Just a week and a half after BHA and partner organizations submitted a coalition letter (led by American Whitewater) to the Forest Supervisor for the Plumas National Forest, a 2 year long closure was lifted and public access restored to the river. Hundreds of species are threatened by climate change and severe weather across the West. In the Southern ...

A United Front to Preserve Hunting & Fishing in Oregon

Author: Danny Miller
Ben Franklin is quoted as telling his fellow revolutionaries that, “We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately.” While the consequences of the issues we face today are not near as dire, Franklin’s lessons are still very relevant. Lesson one, if we let small differences of opinion become greater than the overall mission, we will be overcome. Lesson two, when we work together we’re a force to be reckoned with. This is the ethos behind the Oregon Sportsmen’s ...

Prepping for Your First Western Hunt

Lessons learned the hard way By Garrett Golding   The temperature began to plummet as we parked at the trailhead. By the time we settled at the base of a small fir tree, the north wind was casting waves of snow over the meadow that lay before us. The setting could not have been more perfect, like a painting of what a Colorado elk hunt should look like. I fought back visions of a mature bull stomping out of the tree line ahead of us. And then that’s exactly what happened. How did we get ...
