AFI Event Review (St Croix River)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
St Croix River Fly Fishing for Smallmouth and Musky "I had a great time at the St Croix River Dual Skills Camp this past weekend. I had no idea this super floatable river and this level of fly fishing could be found in Wisconsin. The classes on the history of the region and the historic portages dating back to the 1500s that guarantee public access."   The combination of fishing, learning about conservation, and veteran companionship was a really coll idea and combined everything I needed. ...

AFI Event Review (North Carolina Upland Hunting Class)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
2021 North Carolina Upland 101 Dual Skills Camp   AFI Leader Marty Bartram: “This event was a challenge as we were trying to teach Upland fundamentals in a part of the country with a real niche upland habitat.”   AFI participant Hunter Owen: “I had no idea there were upland opportunities so close to Fort Bragg. Chasing ruffed Grouse in the mountains feels like a whole different game than the pheasants on Fort Reilly, Kansas.”   AFI Volunteer Cooper Akin: “I knew I was interested in an ...

AFI Event Review (Great Lakes Salmon 2021)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Great Lakes Salmon 2021 Before this event I was at a heavily regulated army training event that lasted for months in a very intense field environment. The culmination of this training means that I will now be entering the next stage of my career with an increased deployment tempo. During my break between trainings, I was home in Wisconsin and my dad thought it would be good for me to go on this trip. I thought I would miss time with my family, but I didn't quite understand the time why, Dad ...

AFI Event Review (Alaska Caribou 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Learn to hunt Caribou event Alaska, 2023.   When you get stationed in Alaska, it's easy to think that your world of leaving the base is over. What you imagine is this snowy hellscape because that's all you hear about from guys who have been stationed in Alaska. I grew up hunting in the Southeast and never thought twice about trying to hunt while I was stationed in Alaska. I cannot think David made enough for inviting me on this learn to hunt Caribou dual skills camp hosted by BHA. Growing ...

AFI Event Review (Arkansas Snow Goose 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
AFI Event Review AR Snow Goose Feb 2023 Thank you so much for inviting me on the recent learn to snow goose hunt event. I've never been much of a hunter, but I've always been curious, and to be honest I was not thrilled with being selected for the snow goose hunt out of the four or five events, I have a plied for. I've seen the piles of 100 Snowgoose dead on social media and thought it didn't seem like a fair chase or in line with the conservation ethic I hold myself to. However, after ...

AFI Event Review (Montana Fly Fishing)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Event Review 2021 Fly Fishing Dual Skills Camp I had never heard of BHA before this event, and now I visit your website every day for more information and more stories of how I can get involved in conservation. I've been a fly fisherman for a long time, but I'm a relatively new hunter. I didn't come to this camp expecting to learn a lot about flyfishing and to be fair; I didn't. I learned how fishing and the appropriate management of fisheries help conservation. I also learned about the ...

AFI Event Review (Turkey Camp 2021)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Event Review Turkey Dual Skills Camp 2021 Thank you so much for hosting this turkey event. I was able to harvest my first turkey with a shotgun but that's not why this event was important. This event was important because the day I got out of the Navy I lost all sense of who I was and what my mission in life is. I've always loved the outdoors and I've been involved with hunting and fishing for the past several years. The piece that ties it all together is combining my peers in the military ...

AFI Event Review (New England Waterfowl 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Event Review 2023 New England Waterfowl   "I work in emergency services. Throughout my military career and the past six months at work, I have been involved in a series of traumatic events that have been affecting my ability to deal with life. Sharing duck boats and A-frame blinds with you over the last three days has been more helpful than you could imagine.  I can't explain it; we never talked about anything related to the things causing my anxiety or trouble sleeping, but all those ...

AFI Event Review (Alaska Ice Fishing 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Alaska Ice Fishing Event Dec 2022   I need to tell you about your Alaska AFI leader, David May. I cannot thank him enough, and he needs some sort of award or recognition. David May saved my life. I was in a bad place before BHA and AFI. Because of David, I am feeling better than I have in Years. My marriage is better, my home life is better, and my work is better. Thanks to David, I have a new purpose in the Armed Forces Initiative.

AFI event Review (Oklahoma Waterfowl 2024)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Event review from Oklahoma Waterfowl Dual Skills Camp 2024. "Wow is all I can say about this event. I went from thinking I would never harvest a duck to learning more than I ever thought there was to learn about Duck hunting. Jocelyn was incredible to learn from. Her calling, decoys, and teaching style made this fun and easy. I shot my first duck as I parachuted down through naturally flooded timber, and I couldn't be more excited. All the mentors were amazing, and the classroom instruction ...
