EVENT RECAP: Tree Plating at Gale Meadows Wildlife Management Area

We awoke to grim skies Saturday morning, but with raincoats in tow we were prepared to have a great day on our public lands, nonetheless. The hour drive was unexpectedly dry and when we arrived at Gale Meadows Wildlife Management Area we were greeted by a platoon of men and women ready to get to work. After a short walk through old forest cuts to promote early successional growth (which they did, successfully), we emerged from the canopy to the foundation of an old farmstead, which happened ...

Author: Montana BHA
The first crop of pheasant chicks are hatching at Montana State Prison’s new rearing program, as wildlife managers offer assurances that safety measures are in place given the recent outbreak of avian flu. Last year the Montana Legislature passed House Bill 637, which among its many provisions appropriated $1 million toward a new state pheasant rearing and release program. With a mix of federal and state wildlife dollars, the program is housed at the state prison and operated by ...

2022 Idaho Legislative Recap

Author: Idaho BHA
The Idaho Legislature officially adjourned on March 31, 2022, capping off an 81-day session. As in every year, multiple bills were introduced in the legislature during this session that impact our public lands, waters, and wildlife, and Idaho BHA tracked a number of them closely. Likely the most controversial bill of the year was House Bill 507, which was designed to declare mechanical broadheads and lighted nocks as legal tools for use during Idaho’s archery seasons. Due to our belief ...

From Rags to Tags

Author: Alex Gorman
When I moved to Minnesota in 2020 to start my graduate program in Natural Resources Science and Management at the University of Minnesota, I had high hopes, despite lockdowns and virtual learning, of making connections with people who could mentor me through the process of becoming a hunter and angler. I had the passion and determination; all I needed was a mentor, or as it turns out, a whole group of mentors who could channel that energy. What I found in Minnesota still feels like a ...

Striped Bass Amendment 7: ASMFC Spring Meeting Recap

This is one of those times where we can look back and realize in very specific terms that we CAN make a difference for the resources we care so much about when we engage in the processes that manage them. In a recent conversation on Episode 48 of the American Saltwater Guides Association’s “Guide Post” podcast New England Chapter Board Chair Mike Woods mentioned that if the outcome of ASMFC’s Spring Meeting, and specifically the outcome of the final action on Amendment 7, ended up being ...

OPINION: Timing of FWP's pen-raised pheasants plan is bad

On April 18, FWP announced that a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in wild birds and at domestic poultry farms in Montana. In its cautionary release, FWP explained that "HPAI viruses are extremely infectious and fatal to poultry and some species of wild birds." As we have all learned over the last several years, the potential spread of viruses is serious business. With this new virus emerging in and amongst our bird populations this situation begs an important ...

On Monday the Alaska House Resource committee moved forward with a version of House Bill 120 that maintains recreational rivers designations in the Susitna Basin, thanks in part to a significant amount of feedback from constituents. Alaska BHA members sent letters to members of the House Resource Committee requesting that the language repealing the recreational rivers designations be pulled from the bill.
