Russian River Stream Watch Fencing Project: Longterm Stewardship

Alaska Chapter Backcountry Hunters & Anglers & USFS at the fence site, Sunday June 9th, 2024.    Every year over 150,000 anglers, nearly a quarter of the population of Alaska, fish along the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers. Many of these anglers come from across the country to experience one of the two “red” (sockeye) salmon runs. During peak season the banks of the river look more like a theme park than a wild Alaskan river.   In the past, this ease of access led to habitat ...

Colorado BHA Q2 2024 Update

Author: David Lien
“The natural world sustains us with clean air, unpolluted water, recreation, and natural resources. If we destroy nature, we destroy ourselves.” –Jim Posewitz, Beyond Fair Chase[1]   Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) mission is to ensure North America’s outdoor heritage of hunting and fishing in a natural setting, through education and work on behalf of wild public lands, waters, and wildlife. Although our organization is formed around hunting and fishing, our members are also avid hikers, ...

Wisconsin BHA Signs on to Protect Prairie Chicken Habitat From Solar Farm Project

The Wisconsin Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has signed on to a letter that addresses concerns around the Vista Sand Solar Project, which if allowed, would be the largest solar farm in Wisconsin, and is right in the heart of the habitat for an iconic upland bird species.  The greater prairie chicken was once common in southern and western Wisconsin, but their population has declined due to loss of grassland habitat driven by agriculture, resource extraction, and urban sprawl. That ...

NY sends comment into NYSDEC on OGC-9 Public Rights to Navigation and Fishing

Author: New York BHA
On June 14, 2024 The New York Chapter submitted a comment to NY Department of Environmental Conservation in regards to OGC-9 Public Rights to Navigation and Fishing.  Access to some streams and rivers in NY have been contested over the years as to who has the right to navigate or fish stretches of these rivers.  The original draft of the policy was published in 1991 and since then has been updated a few times.  The latest update appears to have NYDEC stepping away from a prescriptive ...

Indiana BHA Hosts Forest Managment Pint Night with Sentinel Landscape

Author: Indiana BHA
On Saturday, June 15th, we hosted Michael Spalding of Sentinel Landscape at our Pint Night at Heartwork Brewing Co. in Bloomington, Indiana. The event was an essential educational opportunity for those living in the Bloomington area. This is an important part of the state for our chapter as Bloomington sits on the edge of the Hoosier National Forest, the largest body of public land in Indiana. It has also been the site of a battle over forest management. Many environmental groups call ...

AFI Event Review (New England Waterfowl 2023)

Author: Trevor Hubbs
Event Review 2023 New England Waterfowl   "I work in emergency services. Throughout my military career and the past six months at work, I have been involved in a series of traumatic events that have been affecting my ability to deal with life. Sharing duck boats and A-frame blinds with you over the last three days has been more helpful than you could imagine.  I can't explain it; we never talked about anything related to the things causing my anxiety or trouble sleeping, but all those ...

BHA opposes mandated seats for special interests on Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania BHA leaders and members - and all of our conservation organization allies - were hopeful earlier this year when there was not one, but two bills, one each in the Senate and House, that would finally do away with the ridiculous prohibition on Sunday hunting in the Keystone state. We have watched with dismay as the Sunday hunting bill in the senate has been sullied with an unnecessary and dangerous addition that would alter the makeup of the Pennsylvania Board of Game ...

Grouse Creek Pack Out Recap

Grouse Creek Pack Out Recap Words and Photos by Melissa Hendrickson   How much trash can 12 adults, 3 pre-teens, and 3 toddlers pick up in 3 hours? Apparently the answer is 2 overfull dump trailers and a pick-up bed full! Or at least that was the amount a crew of BHA members and friends did recently at a shooting site in North Idaho. I “discovered” the site on Easter, when our family went out for a bike ride on the road by the shooting pit. I say “discovered” in quotes because the site was ...
