Sunday Hunting coming soon to Pennsylvania

By Don Rank HARRISBURG, PA, July 9, 2025 – This morning, at a small ceremony near the state capital, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed into law House Bill 1431. At last the ban on Sunday hunting has been lifted in Pennsylvania – a hard-earned victory for which Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and its Pennsylvania Chapter should take pride. History The inability to hunt on Sundays in Pennsylvania dates to the days when Ulysses S. Grant was president. Back then, it was one of many “Blue ...

Two PA Sunday hunting bills introduced for 2025 legislative sessions

Pennsylvania Senate bill SB67, and House bill HB851 were introduced recently and referred to each chamber’s Game & Fisheries Committee. Both SB67 and HB851 would permit the Pennsylvania Game Commission to set all seasons and bag limits including Sundays. Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting prohibition has been a barrier to access for generations. By allowing hunters to go afield only half of every weekend, the state is effectively cutting in half the amount of time most hunters have to set aside ...

BHA opposes mandated seats for special interests on Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania BHA leaders and members - and all of our conservation organization allies - were hopeful earlier this year when there was not one, but two bills, one each in the Senate and House, that would finally do away with the ridiculous prohibition on Sunday hunting in the Keystone state. We have watched with dismay as the Sunday hunting bill in the senate has been sullied with an unnecessary and dangerous addition that would alter the makeup of the Pennsylvania Board of Game ...

PA Senate Action Diverts Game Fund Money, Puts Federal Wildlife Funding at Risk

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is disappointed in the actions taken in the State Senate August 30, 2023 when a last-minute amendment was added to HB 1300 that if enacted, would transfer $150 million from the Game Fund. This proposal was made with little advance notice, was attached to a broad appropriations bill and passed through the Senate in one day. You can view the vote here. This action sets a dangerous precedent for future legislative sessions and violates ...

PA Chapter dips a toe into restoring habitat in deep forest streams

By Samanatha Lutz Pennsylvania BHA Board Member The land that we know as Allegheny National Forest (ANF) in western Pennsylvania today is vastly different than the old growth forest that once covered the Allegheny Plateau. The forest was once characterized by large trees, of various ages, creating a multi-layered forest canopy that provided a rich biodiverse forest floor and essential contributions to our streams. As trees aged and or during natural disaster events, trees would fall near and ...

Thirteen participants caught and released dozens of trout- many of them were first fish on the fly and several large fish were landed in the 18” range. Many ...

Take Action to lower license fees for non-resident students

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is tracking a lot of bills in Harrisburg this session, but one that has our particular attention is Senate Bill 344, authored by Senator Chris Gebhard of District 48 serving Lebanon County and parts of Berks and Lancaster. If passed into law, SB344 will make Pennsylvania one of about 30 states to allow non-resident college and university students to purchase hunting licenses at resident prices. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat ...
