OPINION: Lawmaker to Montana ranchers: You cannot be trusted

“Cows not Condos” is a popular bumper sticker seen across Montana on everything from flatbed ranch trucks in Miles City to grocery getters in Missoula. The slogan captures one of the few sentiments all Montanans agree on: we value our ranchlands over our subdivisions. Senate Bill 115 seems to forget that by creating unnecessary bureaucratic red tape and trampling all over private property rights. Read more here from the Independent Record...

1/15/21 NMDGF Game Commission Recap

Author: Joel Gay
Funding for habitat protection projects throughout the state will roughly double after the State Game Commission last week approved the first increase in the Habitat Stamp in more than 30 years. Raising the fee to $10 a year – it had been $5 since the program began in 1986 – will bring an estimated $8 million a year, including $2 million from NM hunters and anglers and up to $6 million more in matching federal grants. What's Next for the New River Gorge?

Despite our efforts to educate lawmakers about the importance of the New River Gorge National River to hunters, we were unable to guarantee permanent protection for hunting access. As of last night, hunters now worry about the uncertainty of accessing 4,385 spectacular acres in the lower gorge area of the New River Gorge in West Virginia. The debate around a designation change of the New River Gorge National River began in the summer of 2019. Spurred on by other recreation users, the move to ...

Bill continues effort to balance wildlife data with hunter ethics

Author: Montana BHA
Balancing the public’s right to know with potentially sensitive data about wildlife is the subject of a bill from an East Helena lawmaker. Democratic Sen. Jill Cohenour’s Senate Bill 2 builds off of legislation passed in 2019 that banned the use of the exact location of GPS-monitored wildlife obtained through state open records law for the purpose of hunting. The newest bill provides additional language for the release of wildlife location data by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks by ...

Dersu the Trapper by V. K. Arseniev

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Days after finishing V.K. Arseniev’s Dersu the Trapper, I found myself walking a mostly forgotten trail in the woods of Montana with an axe in one hand, and an over and under in the other. It was not my intention to recreate the imagery of the book, but it happened organically out of inspiration. The shotgun was for grouse, and the axe was for cleaning trail. It was the clearest and best I ...
