VIEWPOINT: Daines should stop playing games with Blackfoot Act

Last month, Senator Tester’s Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act passed out of committee. The product of more than a decade, the BCSA enjoys the support of the majority (84%!) of Montanans. It’s the collaborative approach to land management we want to see. The bill designates nearly 80,000 acres of wilderness, protects the headwaters of the Blackfoot and Clearwater Rivers, some of the world's most iconic trout streams, and ensures that some premier big game country remains wild. Where ...

OPINION: Public property rights deserve protection

The Hughes Creek Road in Ravalli County was illegally gated for decades. Landowners blocked the road with gates, threatening signs, and even machinery, essentially giving themselves exclusive access to hundreds of thousands of acres of public lands. The issue has gone to the courts, including the Montana District and Supreme Courts, and the rulings have always been the same: the road must be opened to the public. It’s a public road. Despite the rulings, the illegal gate remained, and ...

OPINION: Don't Forget What Happened Last Session

Since the 2021 legislative session, there's been a lot of outcry from Montana hunters and anglers. Whether it's our discontent about repeated attempts to privatize elk, a disregard for scientific management, or a lack of opportunity for public participation, there's no shortage of complaints coming from the camo crowd. Perhaps no single bill has had a more negative impact on Montana hunters than Rep. Berglee's (R-Joliet) HB 637, signed into law by Gov. Gianforte on May 14, ...

EVENT RECAP: Webb Lake Weeds Trip

Montana BHA teamed up with the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation (BMWF) to treat a weed infestation deep in the Scapegoat portion of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Using targeted spraying, the group primarily sprayed oxeye daisy, toadflax and musk thistle.  The treated area is centered around the Webb Lake Cabin and is the accidental legacy of livestock in the area. Livestock continues to play an important role in the Bob however, and practices to reduce the spread of noxious weeds ...

EVENT RECAP: Lewis Knob Fence Pull and Habitat Restoration

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, 10 Montana BHA volunteers showed up, despite a gloomy and wet forecast, to remove more than a half mile of dilapidated fencing in crucial big game winter range. This section of land currently owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) lies near the Clearwater River just west of the Blackfoot-Clearwater Game Range and receives heavy winter use from elk, whitetail and mule deer.  The group was led by Montana BHA chapter leaders and the Western Land Steward ...
