Acreage Added to Preserve portion of New River Gorge National Park

When the New River Gorge National Park & Preserve redesignation went into effect hunters were left holding the short straw as we were now permanently excluded from 4,385 acres of what was once public hunting access. “We had public hearings and we heard everybody and the hunting community came out forcefully, especially those who hunted portions of the area,” said Senator Capito.   Both Senators Manchin and Capito recognized this issue and have been working with other parties to add land ...

The Case of Mark Maynard vs. Sportsmen and Women Continues

West Virginia sportsmen and women stand to lose more ground as the State Legislature moves forward. Senator Mark Maynard's new Outdoor Recreation Committee seems to have a singular mission in mind: making sure that off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is the main focus and the new direction for recreation on West Virginia’s public lands.  Currently, Senate Bill 468 seeks to make permanent OHV trails on Cabwaylingo State Forest. Proposed changes to the bill include the potential to expand OHV trail ...

Help Stop Legislation to Expand OHV Use on State Lands

West Virginia Backcountry Hunters and Anglers needs you to stand up for our public lands! A series of bills have been introduced for a comprehensive motorized recreation program on our public lands under the pretense of a “wildlife viewing” stamp that would provide off-road access on our Wildlife Management Areas, State Forests and State Parks from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year. This disguised motorized recreation program would turn West Virginia’s public wildlife habitat and hunting ...

11 Ways BHA Chapters Are Working on Public Access to Your Public Lands & Waters Right Now

Author: Tim Brass
Quality public hunting and fishing access consistently tops the list of issues outdoorsmen and women expect Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to help tackle.  The need for recreational access only continues to escalate as the supply of open lands is strained by changing land use patterns and growing development pressures for undeveloped lands and waters.  Limits on supply are being coupled with exploding demand as the pandemic-induced participation increases in hunting, fishing, shooting and ...

Time to Stand up for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Author: Matt Kearns
A great opportunity to stand up for one of our nation’s outdoor treasures could face West Virginia’s Senator Manchin soon.   No one can dispute the beauty of West Virginia’s mountains, rivers, and forests. We are incredibly lucky to be able to have places like Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge close to home. Yet I speak as a West Virginian and as an outdoorsman who has had an opportunity to witness the rare beauty of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. I cannot stress enough ...

What's Next for the New River Gorge?

Despite our efforts to educate lawmakers about the importance of the New River Gorge National River to hunters, we were unable to guarantee permanent protection for hunting access. As of last night, hunters now worry about the uncertainty of accessing 4,385 spectacular acres in the lower gorge area of the New River Gorge in West Virginia. The debate around a designation change of the New River Gorge National River began in the summer of 2019. Spurred on by other recreation users, the move to ...

New River Gorge National Park & Preserve Designation Change

The New River Gorge is unique among our nation’s wild places in that it has seen every facet of man. Native Americans travelled through its corridors and, legend has it, nicknamed it the “river of death.” For a time it was the rugged frontier as Scots-Irish settlers filtered west before Civil War battles rang throughout the region. Coal and timber brought the railroads which transformed the local industry from subsistence farming to resource extraction. Over 60 coal towns popped up along the ...
