The 10th Mountain Division & HR 803 (Protecting America’s Wilderness and Public Lands Act)

Author: David Lien
During a recent visit to the National Museum of the United States Army (at Fort Belvoir, VA), I learned that by the end of World War II (in 1945) the U.S. had 89 Army Divisions deployed overseas, including 68 in Europe: 47 Infantry, 16 Armored, 4 Airborne and 1 Mountain—the 10th Mountain Division.[1] Many Coloradoans know that the 10th Mountain Division was activated at Camp Hale Colorado (on July 10, 1943).[2] From November 1942 through June 1944, Camp Hale housed some 15,000 troops (along ...

Support the Boundary Waters

This Public Lands Month, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and our partners at Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters are highlighting our work on behalf of Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Wildfires closed the BWCA and surrounding areas to visitation this summer and showed the massive impact the Boundary Waters has on tourism and what happens when access to the area is restricted. Learn what you can do today to ensure future generations of hunters and anglers have access to the ...

Colorado Elk Hunting: Right Place, Right Time

Author: David Lien
The vast majority of the well over 200,000 hunters who purchase elk tags in Colorado each year don’t leave the mountains with a quartered or boned-out elk en route to the freezer, myself included. In fact, my elk hunting success (albeit limited) over the years can primarily be attributed to being in the right place at the right time, or “orchestrated luck.” I’m a firm believer that we set ourselves up to be lucky, in all facets of life, through hard work and persistence no matter the ...

"How The Hell Did That Get Here?" Packing Out at BHA HQ

“How in the hell did that get out here?" Josh, Zack and I stared at the old, dilapidated Hide-a-Bed. It was rusted shut in its folded position from years of rain and snow. We knew we couldn't leave this giant piece of trash in the woods today, the first Public Lands Pack-Out event of 2021. With a little bit of manpower and a can-do attitude (read: cussed stubbornness), the oxidized heap of metal springs soon was sitting in the back of the truck on its way to its final destination: the ...

Crispy 5-Spice Wild Duck

Author: Jenny Ly
In Chinese-Vietnamese cooking, 5-spice and duck is a classic flavor combo. And in this particular recipe, the finishing salt and pepper mix is the star of the show. It is super simple and makes the duck breasts, and many other game animals for that matter, taste incredible. This recipe will likely make extra of the salt and pepper mix, and so I recommend keeping any excess in a tightly sealed jar. Sprinkle it on steak, deep-fried small game and even crispy pork chops. There are two areas ...

EVENT RECAP: Public Land Pack-Out with University of Montana BHA

Missoula staff joined University of Montana BHA students for a public land pack-out on Lolo National Forest as a part of BHA's goal to pack out 10,000 bags of trash from public lands in the month of September. Plant Creek is a chunk of U.S. Forest Service land that has experienced high rates of legal - albeit irresponsible - recreational shooting that has left the area in desperate need of attention. Shells, casings, electronics, cans, paper targets, and thousands of pounds of microtrash ...

New BHA Member Finds Community and ... Elk!

My name is Curtis Williamson, and I am a member of the BHA Armed Forces Initiative. I received orders to be stationed in Newport, Oregon, in December 2019, right before Covid became prevalent. Needless to say, I was lost as to what to do out here in Newport when things shut down as we were still very new to the area. I had a friend, who is now my hunting partner, tell me about BHA and all that you have do across the nation and I just had to join! What you all do is absolutely amazing ...

American Wildlife Conservation Partners Letters

In August of 2000, the Boone and Crockett Club hosted an historical conservation summit that has had a profound effect on the future of wildlife. This landmark meeting resulted in the creation of the American Wildlife Conservation Partners, a coalition of wildlife organizations focused on conservation, healthy fish and wildlife populations, and responsive management of important areas of habitat. As of 2021, AWCP has grown to 50 organizations, including Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. AWCP ...

EPLUS Could Be Up For Change in 2022

Author: Joel Gay
(Second in a series) Most western states have a “private land” program for elk hunting, but New Mexico’s EPLUS – the Elk Private Land Use System – is arguably the most liberal landowner tag allocation in the West. It’s no mystery why New Mexico has such a program. The big question is why does it operate the way it does. And more to the point: What can be done to change it? The basis of EPLUS is clear. The state Legislature in 1989 passed a law that says flatly: “The director of the ...
