The series were targeted towards the many new hunters that had taken their Hunters Education in the spring and summer. The increase in people taking the education and safety course, as well as the dramatic increase in license sales this year in New York, indicates that more and more of us are taking to the woods and outdoors to ...

Take action to preserve New Jersey bear hunt

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently called for an end to all bear hunting in New Jersey after the 2020 season. Murphy has already used his executive power to end bear hunting on all public land in the Garden State. Governor Murphy’s bold statement, “This means, that the 2020 bear hunt… will be the last bear hunt under my administration” is politically motivated, emotionally charged and scientifically flawed. Backcountry Hunters and Anglers believes in science-based wildlife management ...

(Hot*) Italian Venison Bratwurst

I can’t take credit for this recipe, though I’m not sure where exactly I pulled it together from… My late friend’s family recipe book from their Alaskan kitchen? That sausage party in Missoula back in 2015 that my brother took me to!? All of the above. Food has a story to tell and for me that always includes the chain of custody on the recipe, a story told best ...

The Sharptail Caucus

Author: Ryan Busse
This article originally appeared in the fall 2020 issue of Backcountry Journal.   BY RYAN BUSSE   As a young man I once stood on a mountain ridge so beautiful that I now find it impossible to describe. It was summer and a bird dog was at my side when I discovered the place that would change my life and come to be part of my very being. Like a military bootcamp, it broke me and then built me back up – wild, harsh and unspoiled by the hand of man and owned equally by all citizens of this ...
