What's Next for the New River Gorge?

Despite our efforts to educate lawmakers about the importance of the New River Gorge National River to hunters, we were unable to guarantee permanent protection for hunting access. As of last night, hunters now worry about the uncertainty of accessing 4,385 spectacular acres in the lower gorge area of the New River Gorge in West Virginia. The debate around a designation change of the New River Gorge National River began in the summer of 2019. Spurred on by other recreation users, the move to ...

Missouri BHA Joins Coalition in Defending Lindenlure River Access

Historic use at the Lindenlure access site The Finley River is a 54-mile-long tributary of the James River, most of it flowing through Christian County, Missouri. It is a well known waterway used for swimming, floating and fishing. The “Lindenlure” access, located just below Lindenlure Lake, has been used by generations of families by way of Canyon Road. As David Romano of the Rivers Access Coalition writes, "The public easement and right of access at Lindenlure dates back some 100 years — ...

Bill continues effort to balance wildlife data with hunter ethics

Author: Montana BHA
Balancing the public’s right to know with potentially sensitive data about wildlife is the subject of a bill from an East Helena lawmaker. Democratic Sen. Jill Cohenour’s Senate Bill 2 builds off of legislation passed in 2019 that banned the use of the exact location of GPS-monitored wildlife obtained through state open records law for the purpose of hunting. The newest bill provides additional language for the release of wildlife location data by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks by ...

Dersu the Trapper by V. K. Arseniev

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Days after finishing V.K. Arseniev’s Dersu the Trapper, I found myself walking a mostly forgotten trail in the woods of Montana with an axe in one hand, and an over and under in the other. It was not my intention to recreate the imagery of the book, but it happened organically out of inspiration. The shotgun was for grouse, and the axe was for cleaning trail. It was the clearest and best I ...

North America's Most Extreme Big Game Hunt

Author: Janet George

Extreme terrain, extreme wind and extreme cold all combine to make goat country one of the most spectacular and severe environments in North America. Such extremes have molded the mountain goat, as author/biologist Douglas Chadwick dubbed “a beast the color of winter.” And ...

Venison Sausage Stuffing

Author: Wade Truong
If you’re reserving stuffing for only holiday meals, you’re seriously missing out. While this dish by Field to Table contributor Wade Truong is perfect as a holiday side, it’s no less delicious at any other time of the year. There is an argument to be made that the best parts of a holiday meal are the side dishes. The turkey or ham (or both) are supposed to be the headliners, but I find myself going back for seconds and thirds of stuffing and gravy more often than the bird or the pig. The ...

Take Action for Sunday Hunting in Virginia

Photo courtesy of board member Wade Truong Restrictions on Sunday hunting are an impediment to reasonable hunting access, limiting the opportunities of working hunters and restricting hunter recruitment and retention.    HB 1799, introduced by Delegate James E. Edmunds, would remove the Sunday hunting prohibition for all species on Virginia's public lands. The passage of this bill could mean that Virginia’s 261,000 sportsmen and women could spend double their time afield, increasing our ...
