FWP 'clean-up' bill draws debate

Author: Montana BHA
Legislation characterized by supporters as a “cleanup” bill for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to tweak language in several areas of law saw pushback from opponents this week who saw it as a “catch-all” bill compiled of provisions that deserve more scrutiny. After passing the House earlier this month, House Bill 637 from Rep. Seth Berglee, R-Joliet, was heard and passed by Republicans on Thursday in the Senate Fish and Game Committee with Democrats opposed. HB 637 amends several sections of ...

OPINION: HB 637 is a mess of a 'clean-up' bill

For a "clean-up" bill, House Bill 637 is a mess. On its face, HB 637 aims to clarify language found in existing laws. These non-substantive, clerical changes would be fine if the bill stopped there. However, Rep. Seth Berglee’s 27-page "clean-up" attempt creates more messes than it would correct. We have seen bill after bill this session favoring the wealthy, skewing opportunities and assigning decision makers based on how much land someone owns, how much they're willing to pay or whether or ...

Protect Indiana's Habitat: Urge the Governor to Veto SB 389

The majority of Indiana’s wetlands are under attack as SB 389 has now passed both chambers of the Indiana legislature. Currently, only wetlands that are connected to navigable waters or their tributaries are protected by federal law, while federal protections of isolated wetlands were left unprotected through an administrative repeal of provisions in the Clean Water Act. Thankfully, two decades ago, the State of Indiana recognized the importance of protecting clean waters and high quality ...

No one has the right to dump their garbage on our lands, and as public land owners, it's our duty to help police these places. To encourage good stewardship, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers offers up to a $500 reward to individuals who report information on illegal dumping that leads to a conviction. By collecting license plate numbers, the date and location of where the dumping ...
