Maine 2021 Policy Roundup

2021 was the first year of the biennial session of the Legislature and a busy one for the Maine BHA policy team. In addition to the big $40 million Land for Maine’s Future win, volunteers worked on number of issues of interest to BHA. From January to June we reviewed innumerable bills related to fish and wildlife and habitat conservation and identified 15 bills as BHA priorities. Bills are often scheduled for hearings on short notice and it can be a scramble to research the issue, develop a ...

Montana elk season proposal approved to the disappointment of many

Author: Montana BHA
Ending a chaotic public process lasting six months, the Fish, Wildlife & Parks commission voted in favor of several big changes to Montana’s elk and deer seasons, including limiting hunters to their first choice for elk bull permits. On Friday, after the commission proposed amendments to FWP’s elk season proposal, a notable thing happened during public comment: Representatives of hunters, outfitters and rich landowners – normally adversaries when it comes to elk – all called for the ...

Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission adopts new elk hunting regulations — with amendments

Author: Montana BHA
Hunters will have new regulations for taking elk in the 2022-23 seasons, but the changes won’t be as dramatic as earlier proposed with an amended and unanimously approved update Friday by the Fish and Wildlife Commission. Earlier, the proposed regulations had elicited outrage by many hunters, and Friday, many members of the public on all sides of the aisle said the process had created so much confusion, they wanted the update tossed out and a return to the 2020-2021 regs. Instead, ...

Wildlife commission adopts elk regulation changes

Author: Montana BHA
Elk regulations for the next two years are set following a marathon meeting of the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission on Friday that saw commissioners navigate widespread confusion and temper several controversial proposals. Friday’s vote was the culmination of a months-long process to update hunting regulations for 2022 and 2023. This year’s process took on a different look as Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Director Hank Worsech pushed a simplification effort to revise regulations by ...

OPINION: Clarity, finally, in the Crazy Mountains

The long-simmering debate over public access finally had a hearing in court earlier this month. We take no joy in filing lawsuits; this is always our least preferred option to settle conflicts. It’s our last resort. However, the situation in the Crazy Mountains, where landowners have been illegally blocking public trails and the United States Forest Service isn’t doing anything about it, was one of these scenarios where we have no choice. So, in 2019, we reluctantly resorted to legal ...

The Custer Gallatin National Forest’s new guiding doc

Author: Montana BHA
After six years and tens of thousands of public comments, one of the largest and most popular national forests in the Northern Rockies has a new forest plan to guide its management for the next 15 years. The new forest plan will replace the 1986 and 1987 Custer and Gallatin forest plans. (Custer and Gallatin were combined in 2014. Prior to that they were separate national forests with individual forest plans.) The new plan fleshes out how the U.S. Forest Service will balance ecological, ...

Controversial elk hunting regs on Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission agenda Friday

Author: Montana BHA
If elk were dimwitted and equally distributed across Montana, setting rules for hunting them might be easier. But the ungulates can apparently figure out where to elude bullets and arrows, and in the face of a more-than-healthy elk population in many places but too few in others, the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department is working through a new set of hunting regulations to address the conundrum. “The reality is we’ve got places where there’s too many hunters and not enough elk on public ...

Idaho BHA Comments on H0507

Author: Idaho BHA
On February 1, House Bill No. 507 was introduced by the Idaho House Resources and Conservation Committee. The bill pertains to archery equipment and would make it legal for lighted nocks and mechanical broadheads to be used in the taking of game, effective July 1, 2022. While Idaho BHA does not have a formal position or opinion on the use of these tools, the Fish and Game Commission – not the legislature – should make that determination. For that reason alone, we oppose H0507. Many BHA ...

Checking In With Our Access Raymond Commission Tag Winner

About this time last year the Wyoming Chapter launched our Access Raymond Raffle which raised $47,000 through a commissioner tag generously donated by Commissioner Gay Lynn Byrd. We donated these funds to Wyoming Game and Fish to construct infrastructure needed to utilize an access easement secured by RMEF. Through our combined efforts the public now has access to the 33,000 acre Raymond Mountain Wilderness Study Area. We thought we'd check in with the winner of this tag to see how his hunt ...
