OPINION: Reject East Crazy Mountains land swap proposal

Just like Holland Lake, the U.S. Forest Service is at it again — trying to pull a fast one on the public by putting forward a significant proposal that would negatively impact our public lands, public access and public opportunities. All the while private interests would get exactly what they want. The USFS recently put forth the proposed “East Crazy Inspiration Divide Land Exchange.” The proposal is complex and convoluted, intertwining what should be a simple land exchange in the ...

OPINION: It's up to us to defend our hunting traditions

Hunting season is here. Many hunters— including me — will head out this weekend in search of good times and a chance at harvesting Montana’s publicly owned game. While afield I’m often reminded of how lucky I am to hunt and to participate in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. This fuels my desire to preserve our traditions and opportunities and push back against efforts to privatize and commercialize our wildlife. Time afield also provides an opportunity for introspection. ...

OPINION: Hollow complaints on elk management

Debby Barrett, former lawmaker from Dillon, is reprimanding Montana FWP for not using more tools to kill more elk in Montana. Pointing to her legislation from nearly 20 years ago, she highlights tools FWP should use, including “liberalized harvests, game damage hunts, landowner permits, (and) animal relocation.” Conveniently, Barrett fails to mention that these very tools — save the logistically challenging relocation of elk — are widely employed by FWP already. The only reason these ...

OPINION: Clarity, finally, in the Crazy Mountains

The long-simmering debate over public access finally had a hearing in court earlier this month. We take no joy in filing lawsuits; this is always our least preferred option to settle conflicts. It’s our last resort. However, the situation in the Crazy Mountains, where landowners have been illegally blocking public trails and the United States Forest Service isn’t doing anything about it, was one of these scenarios where we have no choice. So, in 2019, we reluctantly resorted to legal ...
