University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Hosts Fly Tying Night

The beauty of the outdoors is so alluring that it drives us to attempt to blend in with our scenic surroundings. We accomplish this through clothing that blends in with the environment, calls that produce sounds like the game we pursue, and even mimicking life itself through decoys and lures. Those in this community strive to mirror and better understand what surrounds us in the outdoors. Take a moment now and imagine yourself standing in a flowing stream. In your hand you hold a fly rod, ...

Utah's Elk Management Plan Moves Ahead

Author: Perry Hall
Early in the year, the Utah Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers was approached by Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Big Game Coordinator, now Wildlife Section Chief Covy Jones to have a seat on the Elk Management Plan Committee to re-write the long-term strategic plan for elk management in the state. As a chapter, we’ve been working hard to increase engagement with the Division on critical issues such as this, and immediately accepted the seat at the table. We knew we had our work ...

Colorado BHA Q4 2022 Update

Author: David Lien
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) was born around a campfire in March 2004, thanks to seven hunters and anglers, men and women, taking the initiative.[1] That’s how all battles are begun and won! In fact, BHA was founded by former U.S. Army officer, Mike Beagle. The “Gang of Seven” that gathered around our founding campfire also included a U.S. Navy veteran, Tony Heckard.[2] The first state chapter, here in Colorado, was founded (in 2005) by a former U.S. Marine Corps helicopter pilot, ...

Passage of SB431 Pink Envelope Bill a Win for PA Hunters!

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers applauds the passage today of SB431. Now approved by the full legislature, the bill goes to Governor Tom Wolf, who has said he will sign it into law. This legislation will bring our antlerless license system into the modern age by allowing doe tags to be purchased online and at licensing agents and not exclusively via a confusing mail in system using the dreaded pink envelopes.   At least 500 BHA members and supporters have used ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 143: Feral Horses on Public Lands in Nevada

Author: Thomas Plank
More than 82,000 feral horses roam U.S. public lands, about four times as many as the land and water can sustain. Almost all of them live in Nevada, the most arid state in the union, where their impacts are almost unimaginable: desertification and massive loss of wildlife, ranging from pollinators and other insects to sage grouse, elk, mule deer and pronghorn. The Bureau of Land Management is doing what it can to address this crisis, but the agency finds itself in an impossible position ...
