Gems Among the Aufeis

Author: Kevin Fraley
BY KEVIN FRALEY Snowdrifts piled up and buried my cabin in interior Alaska in the winter of 2019. Outside, temperatures hovered as low as minus 40 degrees. When the cold, dark months trapped me inside, I used the time to dream about Alaska’s short summer and fall seasons. Inside, I pored over online maps, planning an early fall trip. I’d stumbled onto a scientific report from the 1970s that described fish presence in rivers of Alaska’s Arctic Slope, the area of mountains, tundra and ...

How Public Lands Re-centered and Saved Me

Words By Hunter Owen During the COVID-19 outbreak I was in Iraq working with a special operations unit. We had endured freezing temperatures while sleeping in a bunker as Iran launched ballistic missiles at us, lots of sleepless nights before and after the attack. Suddenly I was dealing with some virus that was changing the world, eating undercooked goat for the 10,000th time, and trying to wrap my head around why my wife is telling that toilet paper is hard to get and the kids can’t go to ...

An Update on Wyoming Hunting Trespass

Author: Sabrina King
Wyoming has long worked to balance private property rights with the right to hunt. Under current Wyoming law, it is illegal to enter private property to hunt, fish, trap, or collect antlers: W.S. 23-3-305(b) states, in part, “No person shall enter upon the private property of any person to hunt, fish, collect antlers or horns, or trap without the permission of the owner or person in charge of the property.” This is known as the hunter trespass statute, and it provides Game Wardens with the ...

Making the Switch: A Quick Guide to Going Non-Lead

Author: Mike McTee
By Mike McTee and Corey Ellis   Hunters have touted the lethality of non-lead bullets for decades. Take this quote from the NRA’s American Hunter Magazine: Every now and then a new bullet comes along that redefines what we think we know about hunting projectiles. The Barnes all-copper X-Bullet was one of those, and it has become the most imitated big-game bullet on the market. It was introduced in 1989, and ever since the Barnes X has been a favorite of serious big game hunters wherever ...

WA Chapter Provides Testimony on Why Hunting is Conservation

Author: Chris Hager
Public Testimony given on 10/28/22 at the WDFW Commission Meeting: Good morning, Commissioners, my name is Dan Wilson and I’m the co-chair of the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. During the wildlife committee meeting on Oct 13, I was disappointed when a commissioner cast doubt on the idea that hunting plays a primary role in conservation and I feel the recurring obligation to clarify the interdependency of hunting and conservation before this body. Of course economic data ...

caribou testimony WA chapter

Author: Chris Hager
Public Testimony at the 10/28/22 WDFW Commission Meeting: Good Morning Commissioners, My name is Dan Wilson and I’m the co-chair of the Washington Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. On behalf of our chapter, I would like to strongly voice our support that the Woodland caribou remain listed as state endangered species in Washington. I also feel compelled to state that it is simply insufficient to list them as an endangered species and allow a periodic review to act as a eulogy to this ...

OPINION: It's up to us to defend our hunting traditions

Hunting season is here. Many hunters— including me — will head out this weekend in search of good times and a chance at harvesting Montana’s publicly owned game. While afield I’m often reminded of how lucky I am to hunt and to participate in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. This fuels my desire to preserve our traditions and opportunities and push back against efforts to privatize and commercialize our wildlife. Time afield also provides an opportunity for introspection. ...
