Big Gumbo Fence Removal - Part 2

  June 21st, 2025 - Volunteers from the Montana and North Dakota chapters gathered in the "Big Gumbo" area just south of Marmarth, ND for part 2 of an ongoing stewardship effort in North Dakota's largest continuous swath of BLM land. In 2024 volunteers "inventoried" fence - mapping unknown fence lines on the map, meanwhile noting the composition and condition of the fence. North Dakota BHA Inventories 50 Miles of Fence on BLM

Last weekend, North Dakota BHA board members spent the weekend inventorying nearly 50 miles of fence using ATVs on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Big Gumbo represents the last continuous sage steppe habitat for Greater sage grouse (GRSG) in the state of North Dakota, holding the only active leks found on BLM parcels within the area. EVENT RECAP: North Dakota BHA Hosts Work Day

Last weekend, ten BHA members, including three kids, spent their Saturday removing old tree guards and picking up trash at Pipestem Reservoir. After a day's hard work, the group managed to fill several dumpsters worth of trash.                                   The work day was in partnership with the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, who manages Pipestem Reservoir. EVENT RECAP: ND BHA Supports U.S. Forest Service Sheyenne National Grasslands Stewardship Project

On April 14th, six BHA members (plus three kids!) helped clean up Hankinson Hills, a U.S. Forest Service property about an hour southwest of Fargo. The 2800-acre property is a beautiful rolling oak savannah with abundant opportunities for turkey and deer hunting, camping, and hiking.   The campground in particular gets heavy use during the summer months.
