When We Think We Know It All

By BHA Conservation Director, Holly Endersby. Scientists recently gave the nod to sea otters as unlikely protectors of estuary health. It seems the otters eat crabs which feed on small invertebrates that slurp up algae which bloom when water has increased nutrients in it. The algae grow on the leaves of sea grass-the canary in the coal mine of estuary health-causing less sunlight to reach the sea grass resulting in a die back of the plant. Nutrients increase in estuaries most commonly from ...

An Admirable Identity: Helping the Hunters’ Legacy Resonate in an Era of Change

Author: Karl Malcolm
The following article appeared in the Winter 2014 Issue of the Ruffed Grouse Society magazine. By BHA Member, Karl Malcolm Visualize a map of the North American continent. Mentally focus on a special, natural place that comes to mind. Maybe it’s a favorite stretch of trout water where the mayfly hatches are like clockwork. Maybe it’s a rugged ridge where a bull elk bugled so close you could feel it in your chest and the hair on the back of your neck stood on end. Maybe it’s a family camping ...

New Poll Shows Western Sportsmen See Greater Sage-Grouse Conservation as Important

Nov. 19, 2014 – A new poll shows that sportsmen and women in the heart of greater sage-grouse country want to protect the bird and the sagebrush landscape that supports it, other wildlife and the Western way of life. The results released Wednesday by the National Wildlife Federation show that a majority of sportsmen surveyed in 11 Western states back restrictions in important habitat to save the greater sage-grouse and avoid its placement on the federal Endangered Species List. Curiosity Killed the Doe

By New England BHA Board Member, Corey Ellis   I awoke feeling optimistic about the day’s hunt. After almost forty outings last season trying to harvest my first animal using traditional equipment, it was an unusual feeling. When I moved out east, I had thought that I would have plenty of opportunities to use the more restrictive equipment hunting New Hampshire versus hunting the West, where I had all my life up until this point, because the East Coast is “over run with deer.” Little did I ...

New Video Highlights Importance of Wilderness for Wildlife

Author: Wyoming BHA
A new video developed by the University of Wyoming, highlights the importance of designated wilderness areas for five of Wyoming’s migratory big-game species.  The researchers detail how elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep and pronghorn all use Wyoming and Colorado wilderness areas, mostly as high-country summer range. It’s the first time that these migration corridors have been mapped to specifically see how animals use wilderness areas. These wildlife migration patterns have been mapped ...

Protect and Manage Federal BLM Land

Conserve public land I read with interest Karl Puckett’s Sept. 14 story, “Sportsmen seek protections for BLM backcountry,” about the Bureau of Land Management’s new efforts to protect Montana’s undeveloped backcountry lands. It’s welcome news at a time when many pressures are coming to bear on the kind of hunting opportunities that most of us have grown up with and have taken for granted. As resident sportsmen, we’re witnessing what has been long the norm in more crowded states — loss of ...
