British Columbia BHA Spring 2016 Update

The BC Chapter had a busy winter. We hosted the Hunting Film Tour at Cranbrook’s Key City Theatre on Feb. 27. This is our chapter’s annual fundraiser and membership drive event and an opportunity to promote BHA values to hunters in our area. Thank you to Committee Chair Alan Duffy and his committee members for another outstanding BC BHA event. We doubled our attendance from last year with a crowd of 280 people, including many young hunters. Our fundraising swag included 2 rifle packages, a ...

Arizona BHA Spring 2016 Update

AZ BHA has joined Arizona Sportsmen for Wildlife Conservation. We attended our first meeting in February. This organization unites the most important conservation organizations in Arizona and controls grant funding from the monies collected from the Arizona conservation license plate. During the meeting the membership voted unanimously to craft a “No Public Lands Transfer” proclamation to share with state politicians, businesses and other organizations.  We also attended the AZGFD-led ...

Alaska BHA Spring 2016 Update

With great sadness the Alaska chapter bids farewell to our long-term chair Mark Richards. Mark has taken a position with an Alaska-based hunting organization, and while he will be sorely missed, he is still very much on the scene advocating for wildlife and hunters alike in the 49th state. Mark is a founding member of AK BHA and has been a tireless champion for wildlife, habitat and hunting since the beginning. Thank you for all you have done, Mark. The Alaska chapter is pleased to announce ...

BHA Statement on Cancellation of Badger-Two Medicine Leases

MISSOULA, Mont. – Backcountry Hunters & Anglers today praised an announcement by the U.S. Department of the Interior that one of the last remaining oil-and-gas drilling leases in the Badger-Two Medicine area of the Lewis & Clark National Forest will be cancelled. The region lies between the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Glacier National Park. BHA board member Ryan Busse, a Kalispell resident, issued the following statement: “The Badger-Two Medicine ranks high among Montana’s most beautiful and ...

Unlocking Landlocked Public Lands

Each year, America’s 40 million hunters and anglers contribute $200 billion to the national economy, and support millions of American jobs. Hunting and fishing aren’t mere pastimes, they are lifestyles; lifestyles that depend fundamentally on access to quality fish and wildlife habitat. For many hunters, including 72% of all hunters in the Mountain West and Pacific states, access means public lands. Without reliable access to quality habitat, sportsmen reduce their days afield and reduce ...

Expanding Public Access on Colorado's State Trust Lands

Author: Tim Brass
The state of Colorado currently provides public hunting and fishing access on a mere 20 percent of its state trust lands, or approximately 480,000 of 3 million acres. This represents the lowest level of public access offered on state trust land in any state in the West. Of the other 80 percent, much of the best hunting and fishing is leased to the highest bidder for exclusive recreational access, locking out most sportsmen. Contrast this with our federal public lands, nearly all of which are ...

Colorado BHA Op-Ed: Transferring Federal Public Lands to States Bad for Hunters and Anglers

As a big game hunter who (like over 90% of Colorado sportsmen) hunts public lands, the recent push by some elected officials and big-industry groups to transfer our federal public lands to state ownership, or to sell them off outright to private interests, is more than a little troubling. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that long ago (during the Bush administration years) that similar shenanigans were taking place: former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a bill requiring the federal ...

What America's Outdoor Media says about the Public Land Siezure

Outdoor Life Online: Dec. 31, 2014 “Stop this Silly Talk” ... instead of continuing to talk about shedding federal land in America, let’s talk about making what we have more accessible and productive. Field & Stream Online: Dec. 31, 2014 “The ‘ultimate disaster’... The idea to sell or give away these lands... is now a major concern.” Petersen’s Hunting Magazine. Dec. 2014-Jan. 2015 “But instead of adding more land, our Federal government, in most cases spearheaded by conservative Republicans ...

Maintaining Solitude

We believe that hunting and fishing are inherently silent pursuits. In the field, loud noises should be made sparingly and intentionally – the shriek of an elk bugle, the report of a rifle shot, the war whoop of a large fish brought to hand. The incessant whine of internal combustion is not among those. We live by the ethic of hunting and fishing on foot – or on horseback, raft, canoe or bike. Of course you have to get to the trailhead or the bridge, but that is where the motor should go ...
