By Gerhardt Soeffker - November 8, 2018 - Originally published in the Missoulian. Where I live, near the Blackfoot River, those of us who ply a stick and arrow have been pursuing bugling elk and wary bucks; others have been stripping articulated streamers in front of fall run brown trout. And as the days get shorter, and the nights cooler, it signals the start to general rifle season. For many of us public land owners, this precious time of year marks the start of our time afield in ...

Author: Idaho BHA
Backcountry Hunters & Anglers is the fastest growing conservation group in North America in large part due to the focus on public lands and grassroots efforts to engage the membership.  One of BHA's mantras has been to make it easy for people to show up and be engaged in discussions that affect the places they love to hunt and fish.  "Pint Nights" are popular BHA method for creating that sort of relaxed style of engagement and the Idaho chapter recently held three such events with tremendous ...

OPINION: Vote public lands and waters.

Here in Missoula County, sportsmen and women have it pretty darn good. But that’s no accident, and it’s no longer a secret. As more people figure out how wonderful our community is, our towns will continue to grow, and the surrounding wild lands and agricultural areas will face pressure as well. Our city and county planners are charged with leading this growth responsibly, but we, the residents of Missoula County, can help shape those decisions by voting yes for the new open space bond. As ...

Boise family receives $500 from BHA for turning in illegal motorized users on public land

Author: Idaho BHA
In late April 2018, BHA members Bryan Moore, Hunter Moore and Clay Moore drove to a trailhead on the Emmett Ranger District of the Boise National Forest.  The Moore's were planning to hike along a non-motorized trail to do some bear hunting.  Upon arriving at the trailhead, the Moore's realized they were not the only people at this spot, there was an ATV legally parked at the buck-n-rail fence and signs that clearly mark the start of the non-motorized trail.  In an effort to be respectful of ...
