Bad Public Lands Legislation Requires Attention in Idaho

Author: Idaho BHA
March 1, 2019 On a national level, this week gave conservationists a reason to celebrate.  Senate Bill 47, The Public Lands Package, easily passed the House with a 363-62 vote after having sailed through the Senate with a 92-8 vote.  This rare showing of bipartisan support is a testament to the value Americans place on our public lands. However, here in Idaho, our legislature seems to be tone deaf to the public's appreciation of public lands.  This week we saw the legislature advance three ...

Rhode Island BHA Opposes Canned Hunts, CWD Threat

As recently as last summer, we’ve seen egregious attempts to exploit a legal flaw in Rhode Island to push for the development of the state’s first high fence captive big game hunting facility. This proposal threatens our fair chase hunting traditions and could facilitate the introduction of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) into Rhode Island’s native whitetail deer population.  The proposal would also allow for the importation of wild pigs and hogs for captive hunting, a family of animals that ...

OPINION: Make Fine Match Crime of Gating Public Lands

Author: Joe Perry
By Joe Perry - February 23, 2019 - Originally published in the Billings Gazette As far as real estate deals go, illegally gating a public road in Montana is about as cheap as it gets. Under current law, violators risk a fine of only $10 per day to close off public access for their own personal benefit. Yet that paltry fine is never even levied because it would cost the county more to enforce it than the amount of the fine. As a result, bad actors can close off access to public roads with ...
