Texans Vote to Increase State Parks Funding

Author: Jake Walker
In a show of support for the wild places and history of Texas, voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 5 at the polls earlier this month — dedicating much needed funding to parks and historical sites statewide. Proposition 5 added language to the Texas Constitution to automatically dedicate revenue from the sales tax on sporting goods to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Historical Commission (THC). State law prior to the vote on Nov. 5 simply allowed lawmakers to ...

Continuing the Conservation Ethic

By Corey Ellis One of the greatest impacts of the hunting conservation movement that is our history, all hunters’ history, did not only benefit the game species that hunters pursue. That sage flat that hunters protected not only saved pronghorns and sage grouse; it also saved long-billed curlews and gray flycatchers. A ponderosa glade that was purchased with sportsmen’s dollars and deposited in the bank of public lands not only protected wintering grounds for elk and mule deer; it also ...

Idaho BHA volunteers collect sagebrush seeds to aid wildlife habitat

Author: Idaho BHA
By early December, most big game hunting seasons are wrapped up in Idaho and many folks won't start thinking about deer and elk for several months.  However, it turns out this is a great time of year for hunters to invest in their future hunting opportunities by helping collect sagebrush seeds that can improve habitat.  Sagebrush plays a vital role in winter range for deer, elk and pronghorn (and many other animals) and when sagebrush ecosystems get destroyed by wildfire it can take a very ...

Understanding Access on Arizona's State Trust Lands

Bella, my German Wirehair Pointer, and I quartered through the thick grass cover, prickly pear cactus, yucca, and a few pinon and juniper in search of Arizona’s renowned Gambel's quail. We were hunting a small portion of the over 9 million acres of state trust land in Arizona. Did you know you can use these lands even though they are listed as not “Public Lands” and posted as “No Trespassing”? Some of these lands are open to hunting and fishing if you have a valid hunting and fishing license ...

Mom's Beef Louise

Author: Dj Zor
There seems to be a trend in wild game meals on social media and blogs; the photos are  America’s Test Kitchen quality and the ingredient lists include things I didn’t know existed. There is the potential that we may be giving the impression with this practice that cooking up a deer, elk or quail takes a degree in the culinary arts, and it’s not for the average family or novice cook. We all know nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to wild game preparation. Sure, some care ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, EP. 65: Carp Expert and Public Access Proponent Dan Frasier

Imagine an undiscovered Eden in the heart of South Dakota, a major river lying untouched and forgotten for decades – with epic fishing amidst thunderous solitude. It exists, and Dan Frasier, a pioneer of fly fishing for big carp and author of an Orvis guide to carp flies, found it: 39 miles of the Missouri River, almost inaccessible to the public, almost unknown. He was sorely tempted to keep his discovery to himself. Why he did not is a message for all American conservationists. Listen in ...

Winter 2020 Utah Chapter News

Like every other chapter in BHA, our Utah members have spent a good chunk of the fall hitting the mountains hard during hunting season. We managed to slip in a few events before the hunting season ramped up. In early August, we teamed up with our Utah friends from Klymit, a Utah brand dedicated to providing lightweight sleeping gear for a pint night at Fisher Brewing in Salt Lake City. Klymit donated some awesome sleep system giveaways and raffle prizes. Every attendee went home with an ...
