OPINION: HB 637 is a mess of a 'clean-up' bill

For a "clean-up" bill, House Bill 637 is a mess. On its face, HB 637 aims to clarify language found in existing laws. These non-substantive, clerical changes would be fine if the bill stopped there. However, Rep. Seth Berglee’s 27-page "clean-up" attempt creates more messes than it would correct. We have seen bill after bill this session favoring the wealthy, skewing opportunities and assigning decision makers based on how much land someone owns, how much they're willing to pay or whether or ...

Spring 21 Utah Chapter News

The Utah chapter has stayed vigilant and busy during the past quarter, working as a voice for Utah's public lands and waters and continuing its growth:   The Utah chapter held its 2021 Board elections virtually, having members who applied submit videos on their qualifications and interest in BHA. Protect Indiana's Habitat: Urge the Governor to Veto SB 389

The majority of Indiana’s wetlands are under attack as SB 389 has now passed both chambers of the Indiana legislature. Currently, only wetlands that are connected to navigable waters or their tributaries are protected by federal law, while federal protections of isolated wetlands were left unprotected through an administrative repeal of provisions in the Clean Water Act. Thankfully, two decades ago, the State of Indiana recognized the importance of protecting clean waters and high quality ...

BHA's Illegal Dumping Reward Fund

Our shared public lands and waters are owned by all of us - but when lawbreakers trash these lands, we all lose. No one has the right to dump their garbage on our lands, and as public land owners, it's our duty to help police these places. To encourage good stewardship, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers offers up to a $500 reward to individuals who report information on illegal dumping that leads to a conviction. By collecting license plate numbers, the date and location of where the dumping ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 102: Todd Waldron, Northeast region forest conservation director for the Ruffed Grouse Society and American Woodcock Society

The Eastern forests encompass 51 million acres of timberlands, including the Adirondack Park, which at 6 million-plus acres is the largest protected area in the lower 48 states. This wealth of land abuts the most populous region of the U.S. – exactly why it is the birthplace and the beating heart of the American conservation movement, a movement born from the catastrophic abuses of the not-so-distant past. This is the landscape that produced Theodore Roosevelt (who was climbing Mount Marcy ...

County Line Wildlife Friendly Fence Project- May 13th-15th

Author: Idaho BHA
Join Idaho BHA May 13-15th for a volunteer project to improve fencing for wildlife.  Old, dilapidated livestock fencing can be detrimental to wildlife, particularly big game animals. Movement to and from seasonal habitats can be hazardous and even impeded entirely by certain types of fence materials historically used by range permittees. Idaho Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (IDBHA) has teamed with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) and other partners to support a fence removal ...

Reactivated

BY LUKE FRONTCZAK   The morning had been perfect – clear skies with a long narrow blanket of fog covering the valley floor below my hillside perch, which turned pink as the sun came up. Five seconds before beginning the trek back to camp, a little motion caught my eye as I put on my backpack. Pulling up my binos, antlers filled my vision. My butt involuntarily fell to the ground, and I felt my heart shift from fifth gear into second. After five years of hunting Washington state, this was the ...
