OPINION: Never give up on defending Montana’s public lands

Once again, the Rally for Public Lands at the State Capitol was proof that our public lands and outdoor way of life bind us. The numbers bear it out: 89% of Montanans visit public lands every year. Sixty-four percent hunt or fish. Seventy-nine percent consider themselves conservationists. Eighty-nine percent say public lands positively impact our overall quality of life. These values are the common ground on which we build strong families and pass on the traditions that shape us. But some ...

CA Chapter Tackles Riparian Restoration in Sierra Foothills

The California Chapter of BHA convened in the Southern portion of the Sierra Nevada mountains last Saturday to tackle a riparian restoration project in coordination with the Bureau of Land Management. At a little over 5,000 feet, Lamont Meadow sits nestled at the intersection of several canyons with an active water source flowing through the valley, a rare, precious resource in this arid portion of the iconic mountain range. Not far from the project site, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada ...

Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction by Michelle Nijhuis

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Let me first be clear: This is not a book about despair or tragic endings. It is not a book of environmental alarmism or an impassioned call-to-action to save the wolves and the whales. It's a concise and carefully researched book about people.  Whether you're a fan of him and his music or not, Bob Dylan once said something none of us can really deny, "The only thing people really have in common ...

Castleton BHA Completes Stewardship Project at Otter Creek

Author: Spencer Como
Castleton University BHA hosted a restoration project at Otter Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Mount Tabor Vermont on April 10th with wild success. We had a great turnout of 14 volunteers including two Vermont Fish & Wildlife biologists. We could not have asked for better weather--sunny and 75 was very unusual for Vermont in early April. Over the course of 6 hours, volunteers were able to remove 3,000 yards of barbed wire from the woods. This wire was full of hair tuffs and dried ...

Hunting Bills Stall In The Legislature

Author: Montana BHA
A debate over the role of money in deer and elk hunting in Montana has fizzled out in the Legislature. Senate Bill 143 would have created a $300 early drawing system for nonresident elk and deer licenses. It’s likely dead after missing a deadline in committee earlier this month. Addressing an amendment that overhauled the bill and passed the Senate in February, the policy’s sponsor, Sen. Jason Ellsworth (R) - Hamilton said, "Certainly I’m more than disappointed from where this bill started ...

Maine Sunday Hunting Update

Maine is one of only two states in the US that has a complete ban on Sunday hunting. The Maine leadership team of the New England Chapter of BHA has been considering this issue and related Sunday hunting legislation. The result of this effort is the Statement on Sunday Hunting in Maine, which reviews the issues surrounding this controversial topic and provides recommendations on how Maine could provide Sunday hunting opportunities while addressing the concerns of Sunday hunting ...

FWP 'clean-up' bill draws debate

Author: Montana BHA
Legislation characterized by supporters as a “cleanup” bill for Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks to tweak language in several areas of law saw pushback from opponents this week who saw it as a “catch-all” bill compiled of provisions that deserve more scrutiny. After passing the House earlier this month, House Bill 637 from Rep. Seth Berglee, R-Joliet, was heard and passed by Republicans on Thursday in the Senate Fish and Game Committee with Democrats opposed. HB 637 amends several sections of ...
