Author: New York BHA
From the Chair I hope this newsletter finds everyone ready to hit the turkey woods Saturday morning, or to just get out and enjoy the outdoors whatever your pleasure. This past Sunday I was out enjoying a fine spring morning walk with my wife and two dogs on our property. I just couldn’t help to notice how in sync ...

For her, hunting and fishing go hand in hand with foraging and land stewardship. A board member of the New England chapter of BHA and self described late-onset hunter, Rozelle ...

The Maine Legislature's Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee is accepting comments on two bills that bills would send a new bond for funding for the Land for Maine's Future Program to the voters next November. The two bonds differ in their details--the amount of money and the number of years funded--but either would rejuvenate the LMF program.  What’s most important is for you to testify in support of new funding for the LMF program, to protect public lands for hunting, fishing, ...

Wild Turkey Pozole

Text & Photos by Bailey Smolarek and Ben Siebers  While most of the United States associates turkey with fall and Thanksgiving, to hunters spring and turkey go hand in hand. Watching the woods come to life on a spring morning is and hearing the gobble of a tom cut through the cool morning air signals both a new season of hunting and unforgettable experiences.  Turkeys are native to North America and were likely first domesticated by the Olmecs in south-central Mexico almost 3,000 years ago. ...

Tag Team (Backcountry) Toms

Author: David Lien
Hiking three or four miles through mountainous terrain with 30- to 40-pound packs into some of our nation’s great public lands estate isn’t stereotypical “blinds-and-decoys” turkey hunting, but chasing mountain Merriam’s in southwest Colorado’s backcountry can increase your odds of putting meat in the freezer. During the spring 2021 turkey season, I joined Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Habitat Watch Volunteer Rick Hooley for a mountain Merriam’s hunt in the high and wild San Juan ...
