BHA State Chapter Development (Recruiting/Retaining Leaders & Avoiding Burnout)

Author: David Lien
Finding and empowering more chapter leaders should be among the top goals of all Backcountry Hunters & Anglers chapter leaders, which goes hand in hand with being “the voice for our wild public lands, waters and wildlife.” With more dedicated chapter leaders engaging more boots-on-the-ground members (and others) in support of our great public lands estate, we’ll collectively be more effective hunter-angler-conservationists. Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA)—the first BHA state ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 105: Legendary Outdoor Writer and BHA Board Member Eddie Nickens

For more than 20 years, Eddie Nickens, a member of BHA’s North American board of directors, has been the premier storyteller and scribe of American hunting, fishing and conservation, writing for Field & Stream, Garden and Gun, Audubon and dozens of other publications. It’s a radical understatement to call him an outdoor writer, although the term fits the man who has published the best-selling behemoth of outdoor skills, Field & Stream’s Total Outdoorsman. In their conversation, Hal and Eddie ...

NWR access plan includes more hunting at PA's Cherry Valley; Comment period open now

Author: Nathan Fronk
Access to places to hunt is often referenced as one of the biggest challenges for current and aspiring hunters in Pennsylvania and nationwide. Hike To Hunt: A Story Of Transformation

“Are we there yet?!” This phrase, usually reserved for children in the backseat of a car eight hours into a family road trip, ran through my head on just about every hunting or fishing trip last year.  And the year before that, and even the year before that. No, it wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy hunting and fishing. As an adult onset hunter and angler entering my fifth full season, I frequently wonder how I ever lived without these pursuits. The phrase became an unfortunate mantra because I had ...

Mental Health Awareness Month: Find Healing Outside

May is Mental Health Awareness month.  I’ve gone back and forth on writing this article. What pushed me to this side of the fence is realizing that if it this helps one person get through their struggles, my personal reflection will have been worth it. Covid has brought a number of things to light over the past year. Unfortunately, the prevalence of mental health issues and suicide increased more in the past year than any other 12-month period. Maybe my story can help you or someone you ...

New Law Reignites Debate Over Money’s Role In Hunting Opportunities

Author: Montana BHA
A last-minute addition to a Montana fish and wildlife bill signed into law on Friday reinvigorated a long-running debate over the role of money in hunting in Montana. House Bill 637 is sprawling; it affects game wardens, block management, hunting with dogs and taking turkeys, along with other fish and wildlife management issues in the state. But during the last day of the legislative session, it was amended to include language that boosts the odds of nonresidents with outfitters getting deer ...
