We are talking about 247.3 million acres of public land (70 million of them in Alaska). In the Lower 48, this means elk hunting in the Missouri Breaks of Montana, Wyoming’s best pronghorn and mule deer country, quail hunting in the borderlands of New Mexico, and black bear or even bison ...

Just Keep On Flyin'

“Just keep on flyin’ over!”  We all began laughing out loud and repeating the phrase over and over. We were loading up tools and feeling good after completing a project in a beautiful spot in our state. To most Americans, Kansas is just one of those ‘fly over’ states, or maybe THE fly over state. We Kansans sometimes catch ourselves hoping others continue thinking we have nothing worth looking at in our State. Because we know different.   The Kansas Chapter of BHA had been asked to provide ...

Was It Worth It? By Doug Peacock

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Doug Peacock’s collection of stories in his most recent book, Was It Worth It?, proves his obsession with and loyalty to a life lived on the edges of civilization. Peacock is a man who went further, deeper, and spent more nights in wild places than most. He was so exceptional that Edward Abbey modeled his infamous character George Hayduke on him: a character willing to fight and die for ...

Working together: New trail will open up thousands of acres of Bitterroot Forest lands

Author: Montana BHA
It’s not every day when private, county, state and federal folks come together to open up thousands of acres of public access for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. On Sunday, many of those folks that worked to find common ground will meet at the brand new C. Ben White Trailhead in the West Fork of the Bitterroot to celebrate that accomplishment. It took more than a decade to figure it out and then more partnerships than most people can remember, but a new 1.5-mile trail that begins ...

Avian influenza outbreak stirs concerns over Montana pheasant release

Author: Montana BHA
As June arrives, the U.S. poultry industry is breathing a sigh of relief that the worst of the most recent outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) appears to be over. HPAI is a highly contagious viral disease in chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, ducks, geese, and many wild birds.
