OPINION: What’s good for prisoners may not be good for hunters

In 2022, FWP established a new pheasant release program: “... which aims to engage youth in the sport of hunting, promote hunter success, and provide additional hunting opportunities for hunters of all ages by releasing up to 50,000 pheasants" per year. The legislature approved $1 million annually for this put-and-take operation, with the expectation that FWP would be spending about $20 per pheasant released. This program was incredibly controversial, but was it effective? Let’s take a ...

OPINION: Don't Sell Our Hunting Heritage

Author: Steve Platt
There are some forms of technology in hunting that come down to just personal preference. While others — the ones that adversely affect the experience for all hunters and jeopardize the public acceptance and future of hunting -- those cross the line. With the advent of high-definition, night-vision, heat-sensing, 24/7 live-streaming, solar-powered, remote-operated game cameras, the time has come that we put some checks on game-camera technology and the market it could create before it ...

Bill seeks landowner preference for bison tags as big hunting season continues outside Yellowstone

Author: Montana BHA
Montana lawmakers on Tuesday afternoon heard testimony in favor of and against a bill that would allocate 15% of the state’s special bison hunting licenses to private landowners near Yellowstone National Park. House Bill 522, sponsored by Rep. Marty Malone, R-Pray, would direct Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks to make 15% of special wild bison tags available to people who own or are contracting to purchase 20 or more acres in areas where the animals roam. Emily Cooper, licensing bureau chief ...

Bill bans sale of public land trail camera images for hunting

Author: Montana BHA
The sale of wildlife trail camera images and location trail data for hunting on public lands would be prohibited under a bill that was heard and quickly advanced from committee Thursday. House Bill 547 brought by Rep. Jill Cohenour, D-East Helena, seeks to curtail the technological creep into hunting by drawing an ethical red line over the sale of images, video and data on public lands. Supporters of the bill cited services that have been offered in other states where a person essentially ...

OPINION: Why All Montanans Should Support In-Person Hunters Ed

In Montana, new drivers are required to take an in-person driving test before being allowed to legally operate vehicles. As a high school teacher, I had to be visually observed and evaluated to obtain my credentials. But currently, if you want to pass hunter’s ed in Montana, no such in-person requirement is needed, not even for firearm safety. This must change. In 2020, wanting to limit in-person exposure when the pandemic hit, the Department of FWP pivoted to an entirely web-based course ...

OPINION: It's up to us to defend our hunting traditions

Hunting season is here. Many hunters— including me — will head out this weekend in search of good times and a chance at harvesting Montana’s publicly owned game. While afield I’m often reminded of how lucky I am to hunt and to participate in the North American Model of Wildlife Management. This fuels my desire to preserve our traditions and opportunities and push back against efforts to privatize and commercialize our wildlife. Time afield also provides an opportunity for introspection. ...
