Sunday Hunting coming soon to Pennsylvania

By Don Rank HARRISBURG, PA, July 9, 2025 – This morning, at a small ceremony near the state capital, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed into law House Bill 1431. At last the ban on Sunday hunting has been lifted in Pennsylvania – a hard-earned victory for which Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and its Pennsylvania Chapter should take pride. History The inability to hunt on Sundays in Pennsylvania dates to the days when Ulysses S. Grant was president. Back then, it was one of many “Blue ...

Two PA Sunday hunting bills introduced for 2025 legislative sessions

Pennsylvania Senate bill SB67, and House bill HB851 were introduced recently and referred to each chamber’s Game & Fisheries Committee. Both SB67 and HB851 would permit the Pennsylvania Game Commission to set all seasons and bag limits including Sundays. Pennsylvania’s Sunday hunting prohibition has been a barrier to access for generations. By allowing hunters to go afield only half of every weekend, the state is effectively cutting in half the amount of time most hunters have to set aside ...

Pennsylvania BHA Legislative and Policy Roundup 2022

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has had another busy year advocating for our members in Harrisburg. Our board members have regularly visited the capitol to meet with legislators and we’ve used chapter funds to hire Policy Advisor John Kline, giving BHA a constant presence working on our behalf in Harrisburg. We are the only BHA Chapter with a full-time lobbyist. These efforts have allowed us to build relationships with partners, legislators and leaders in our ...

Passage of SB431 Pink Envelope Bill a Win for PA Hunters!

The Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers applauds the passage today of SB431. Now approved by the full legislature, the bill goes to Governor Tom Wolf, who has said he will sign it into law. This legislation will bring our antlerless license system into the modern age by allowing doe tags to be purchased online and at licensing agents and not exclusively via a confusing mail in system using the dreaded pink envelopes.   At least 500 BHA members and supporters have used ...

It's time to modernize PA's antlerless license system

Whether by working to ensure walk-in-access to our favorite hunting spots or breaking down barriers to recruit new hunters, BHA PA strives to improve access and opportunity for hunters throughout Pennsylvania. Senate Bill 431, introduced by Senator Dan Laughlin, proposes to improve access by authorizing the sale of antlerless deer licenses through the Commonwealth’s new Hunt Fish PA website. The measure would not preclude county treasurers as authorized issuing agents but would remove them ...

11 Ways BHA Chapters Are Working on Public Access to Your Public Lands & Waters Right Now

Author: Tim Brass
Quality public hunting and fishing access consistently tops the list of issues outdoorsmen and women expect Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to help tackle.  The need for recreational access only continues to escalate as the supply of open lands is strained by changing land use patterns and growing development pressures for undeveloped lands and waters.  Limits on supply are being coupled with exploding demand as the pandemic-induced participation increases in hunting, fishing, shooting and ...

Help Pennsylvania BHA Fight for Sunday Hunting

Author: Thomas Plank
Pennsylvania Backcountry Hunters and Anglers believes that restrictions on Sunday hunting are an impediment to reasonable hunting access, and we support the effort made by Senator Dan Laughlin through the introduction of Senate Bill 607, which would allow the Pennsylvania Game Commission full authority to regulate hunting seasons seven days a week. Sunday hunting would double the amount of time that junior hunters can spend in the field without interfering with school and team sports, many ...

Expanded seasons and opportunity for PA hunters this year

Story and Photos by Aaron Hepler We’re currently in “the dog days” of summer. I never quite understood what that meant as a kid. Yeah, it was hot, humid, and buggy, but we got to go to the pool and there was no school. What’s so bad about all that? When I was twelve, my dad took me on the first of many September hunts. I went through countless boxes of #7 ½ shotgun shells unloading my 20-gauge shotgun on speedy doves. Finally, my first coveted archery hunt arrived. The morning was fun, but ...
