Author: Brian Bird
Protect the Nolichucky River: Stop CSX’s Destructive Construction Activities In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastating floods and landslides across Southern Appalachia, a Herculean effort is needed to restore vital infrastructure. TN BHA joins TWRA for Wood Duck Boxes

The Tennessee BHA Chapter had an awesome turnout this past Saturday January 14th, at the Wood Duck Box build event with the TWRA on the Percy Priest WMA. As soon as we arrived, Mark Vance with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) went over what we would be doing that day, and the importance of the wood duck boxes. He informed us that wood ducks use these man-made boxes that replicate hollowed nests in standing trees to lay eggs, and why it is important to have several nest sites ...

Tennessee BHA 2023 Review

Throughout 2023, the Volunteer State BHA chapter had a ton of fun while making an exceptional impact on conservation! We hunted hard together, but more importantly spent time cleaning up our shared woods and waters. We partnered more extensively than ever before with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency and other conservation groups in the state to create a wide spread impact! We look forward to hosting more habitat-focused volunteering events, more frequent get-togethers and expanding ...

Protect the Yanahli WMA

Public wildlife management areas (WMAs) managed by the state agency are a valuable asset to Tennesseans and Tennessee’s rural economies, and Yanahli is one of the state’s most popular. Hunters and anglers are concerned that should this become law, these properties will be diverted to other uses not compatible with hunting and angling, or will be poorly managed. H.B. 1674 by Rep. Cepicky, and S.B. 1839 by Senator Hensley, if passed, will transfer ownership of the 12,800-acre Yanahli ...

11 Ways BHA Chapters Are Working on Public Access to Your Public Lands & Waters Right Now

Author: Tim Brass
Quality public hunting and fishing access consistently tops the list of issues outdoorsmen and women expect Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to help tackle.  The need for recreational access only continues to escalate as the supply of open lands is strained by changing land use patterns and growing development pressures for undeveloped lands and waters.  Limits on supply are being coupled with exploding demand as the pandemic-induced participation increases in hunting, fishing, shooting and ...

USFWS Proposal — Good For The Southeast

Author: Josh Kaywood
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to expand public hunting and fishing opportunities within the National Wildlife Refuge System within the Southeast. We encourage hunters and anglers to join us in commenting on this proposed expansion. Nationally, the increases would enhance public access to 2.1 million acres, encompassing 90 national wildlife refuges and one national fish hatchery – the largest expansion of opportunities to date. This is great news for hunters and anglers and ...

Pre-Season Turkey Scouting Tips

Author: Joey Bell
Well, it is that time of year for some of us.  It is almost like clockwork.  Once New Year’s hits, a switch flips in us die hard turkey hunters.  I really notice it on social media.  What once was a timeline filled with deer hunting or western hunting pursuits, has been replaced by endless questions about shotguns, chokes, shells, decoys, calls, vests, and “not looking for honey holes, but…” posts.  Yes, it’s getting close to turkey season.  The most wonderful time of year for those of us ...

East Tennessee Mountain Bird

Author: Josh Kaywood
The day before my “unplanned” hunt, I was at a customer’s Block Plant in Chattanooga.  My customer asked if I had my hunting gear with me.  “Yes sir!” I replied.  He said he would get someone to show me where their lease was so that I could hunt that afternoon and/or the next morning.  The place was flooded with tracks.  So much it looked like a velociraptor pen.  I finally started hearing a few gobbles before dark.  I had to step aside for a few minutes to record a “Strut Report” for the ...

Turkey Huntin' Out East

Author: Joey Bell
My friend Steven Locke and his buddy Kenneth came down to hunt around middle Tennessee.  After some unsuccessful tries on Public Land, we headed out Saturday morning to the place in Dunlap where I had been a couple days before.  We parked and started walking and calling every now and then.  We finally struck a turk off to our left.  We quickly set up our decoys.  Locke and Kenneth had to lay on the side of the road on their bellies like they were waiting on Yankee Troops to come over the ...
