Pre-Season Turkey Scouting Tips

Author: Joey Bell
Well, it is that time of year for some of us.  It is almost like clockwork.  Once New Year’s hits, a switch flips in us die hard turkey hunters.  I really notice it on social media.  What once was a timeline filled with deer hunting or western hunting pursuits, has been replaced by endless questions about shotguns, chokes, shells, decoys, calls, vests, and “not looking for honey holes, but…” posts.  Yes, it’s getting close to turkey season.  The most wonderful time of year for those of us ...

Turkey Huntin' Out East

Author: Joey Bell
My friend Steven Locke and his buddy Kenneth came down to hunt around middle Tennessee.  After some unsuccessful tries on Public Land, we headed out Saturday morning to the place in Dunlap where I had been a couple days before.  We parked and started walking and calling every now and then.  We finally struck a turk off to our left.  We quickly set up our decoys.  Locke and Kenneth had to lay on the side of the road on their bellies like they were waiting on Yankee Troops to come over the ...

Bachelor Party, Cornhusker Birds

Author: Joey Bell
My bachelor party was for sure going to be unorthodox.  For one reason, I didn’t care at all to spend a few days at a beach getting drunk and another, there are very few people I’d want to spend more than a few days with.  I had told Jacob (my best man) that I wanted to go turkey hunting in Nebraska for my bachelor party.  I wanted a Merriam’s. We had invited a few folks along but to be honest, I was glad it was just Jacob and me.  Also, not many people wanted to take off a week and a half ...

First Public Land Deer

Author: Joey Bell
I have been a private land hunter my whole life growing up on a farm in middle Tennessee.  It wasn’t until I became involved with BHA that I wanted to take my hunting to another level by spending more of my time on public lands.   I was lucky enough to be drawn for a quota hunt on a heavily pressured piece of public land around Nashville this year.  I got in a couple scouting trips to get a lay of the land, but most of my scouting was done with topo maps thanks to OnX.  I got a pack to haul ...
