2023 Muster in the Marsh Recap

"Muster" is a verb. To muster anything takes action, and being the hunters and anglers we are, it’s our nature to do just that. We push ourselves to the limit and give our all for the things we value.  So it’s no surprise that we’re still buzzing a week after BHA’s annual Muster in the Marsh event hosted by the Ohio BHA Chapter. Through multiple months of planning, meetings, new connections, and collaboration, we were able to celebrate our public lands and water amongst some of the finest - ...

Beyond the Cast

Ohio BHA's Policy & Advocacy Committee hopes you follow our journey as we learn about the impacts of lead in hunting and angling, confront our own misconceptions about the subject, and consider voluntary and incremental adoptions of non-lead alternatives as we seek to become better stewards of our public lands and waters and encourage additional research and continued education and communication. As anglers we have an innate connection to rivers, streams, lakes and the larger biotic ...

Ohio learn to dove hunt is a huge success.

The Ohio Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers just wrapped up an exciting Learn to Hunt event.  With over 20 total people involved over the course of three different days, we could make this post quite lengthy.  We could talk about what we did good, talk about what we could improve.  Rehearse quotes from participants new to hunting, describe in lengthy prose the details of the hunt.   We are keeping this simple because of the following statistically-proven fact: Adult non-hunters are ...

Forest Legacy Program to Add 1,200 Acres to Ohio’s Shawnee State Forest

The largest block of public forest in Ohio is soon to be 1,200 acres larger! The strategic acquisition, to be purchased through the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Legacy Program, would provide increased landscape continuity between Ohio’s Shawnee State Park and The Nature Conservancy’s Edge of Appalachia Preserve. For land and wildlife managers alike, fragmented ownership is a headache and a reality of doing conservation in many parts of the East. So for Ohio’s largest chunk of contiguous ...

A Conservation Focus in Ohio’s Recently Signed Budget Bill

On July 17th, Gov. Mike DeWine signed a budget bill into law that includes a number conservation victories which the Ohio Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has been fighting for since Ohio BHA became a chapter in May 2018. The Ohio BHA Chapter executed a successful communication campaign to make sure key legislators, committees, and decision makers heard our voice in support of public lands and waters. This included action alerts, email and phone campaigns, gatherings at the ...

Ohio's Bass Trash and BBQ bash

From the moment the Wisconsin Glacier receded, the Little Miami River has been a backdrop to the rise and fall of people and the ebb and flow of civilizations. The Paleoindians. The mound builders. The Shawnee and the frontiersmen. And finally, the chaco-clad canoer. It’s easy to see why this little river has drawn so much attention over the years. It winds its way through 107 miles of rich, beautiful country and supports too many species to be named. It is a fantastic fishery and, for folks ...

Darby Creek Watershed: Cause for Concern

-Gabriel Karns, Policy and Legislation co-chair of Ohio Backcountry Hunters & Anglers What Ohio may lack in stunning mountain vistas or endless rolling plains of native grasslands, the Buckeye State more than makes up for with its treasured water resources. Our waters, though productive, face a number of ecological threats. The Ohio shoreline is front and center for all the positive things that Lake Erie has to offer, but we also shoulder the burden for solving the many issues related to ...

Reflections on Rendezvous from Ohio

It’s tough to really capture how badass the BHA North American Rendezvous is without experiencing it. The Ohio Chapter had six folks attend this year. We asked each to highlight their favorite part of #Rende2019 to get you all excited for #Rende2020 in Missoula, Montana!   Tim Rogers, BHA Ohio Board Member The highlight of my Rendezvous trip was getting to chat with Land Tawney and Ed Nickens at the hotel bar as things were winding down one night. It’s not often you get to engage in candid ...
