Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Appoint Jerod Swanson to Central Rockies Assistant Regional Director Position

Author: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) recently appointed Jerod Swanson to serve as an Assistant Regional Director for the Central Rockies region. Jerod was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, but his family eventually moved to Minnesota and he grew up in the Twin Cities (i.e., Minneapolis-St. Paul) northern suburbs. “I started hunting and fishing at a young age,” he explained. “My father first taught my brothers and me, but later I found friends in high school and college ...

CO BHA Chapter Newsletter Spring 2024

“One swallow does not make a summer, but one skein of geese, cleaving the murk of March thaw, is the spring.”  -Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac   There’s no other organization like Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Need proof? Take a look at the highlights from the 2023 member survey. What other group boasts a membership that relies on public land 90% of their time afield; eats wild game weekly (50%); is mostly younger (76% under age 54); and–perhaps most amazing in this polarized age–is ...

Volunteers Restore Habitat for Rio Grand Cutthroat Trout

Author: Mike Barker
The Kirtland AFI club and New Mexico Chapter had an incredible time at the Annual Lincoln National Forest stream restoration project on April 20th! Our crew worked diligently to repair two small beaver-like dams, aiming to restore the floodplain of a creek that has suffered from channelization since the 19th century. This restoration is crucial for the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout population, which has vanished from the creek since the 1990s due to the loss of their ideal habitat. Rio Grande ...

OPINION: Hunters and anglers, pay attention

Whether it's repeated attempts to privatize our wildlife or attacks on public access, Montanans have had plenty to complain about recently. While the legislature and Gov. Gianforte have been busy enacting laws like HB 635 from Rep. Kassmier (R-Fort Benton) — which guarantees deer and elk tags to large out-of-state landowners — and HB 637 from Rep. Berglee (R-Joliet) — which established tag giveaways for outfitters and sweetened the deal for landowners who want premium elk permits - ...

California’s New Era in Black Bear Conservation: A Science-Driven Approach with a Role for Hunters

Author: Devin O'Dea
Bear hunting has been an integral part of California’s history since the Golden State was founded in 1850 and for thousands of years prior to colonization. In 2021 and 2022, anti-hunting groups pushed aggressively for legislation and then a petition to the Fish & Game Commission that would have banned bear hunting in the state. Thanks to concerted advocacy efforts by Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) and many other conservation groups, we defeated these attempts to ban bear hunting. Our ...

OK BHA Pilot CWD Program on Wild Deer

Oklahoma BHA Members,  HB3462 has advanced to Governor Stitt’s office and will likely be considered this coming week.  IF passed, the bill would initiate a program involving captive bred deer and integrating them into our wild, huntable, population.  This legislation passed both the House and Senate but appears to have no support from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. The intent of the legislation is to potentially combat Chronic Wasting Disease. Our OK BHA Board is certainly ...

2024 Idaho BHA Legislative Recap

The Idaho legislature adjourned the 2024 session on April 10, bringing to a close what was ultimately a fairly average session from a conservation and public lands perspective. Idaho BHA tracked a wide range of bills that were introduced through both the House and the Senate – a few passed through and were signed into law, some were voted down, and still more ended up stalled for one reason or another but could easily come back in a slightly different form next session. Here are the ...

OH BHA Joins Partners to Take Legal Action Opposing Permitting Process

History In 2011, a law was passed permitting natural gas drilling at state parks in Ohio. (Ohio Senate approves bill to allow oil and gas drilling at state parks). Largely due to public concern about the impact on state parks, then Governor John Kasich effectively eliminated leasing of these lands by not appointing members to the Oil and Gas Land Commission (Ohio House bill would ease fracking in state park). There were various attempts to restart the process, but none was successful until ...

Fish and Wildlife Commission Fail Wildlife, Collaboration in Cougar Rulemaking

Author: Chris Hager
On the weekend of April 19th, while the Washington chapter accepted the George Bird Grinnell award at Rendezvous and volunteers labored to restore habitat along the Yakima River, the Fish and Wildlife Commission lowered the bar on sound management and responsible decision-making for Washington’s Wildlife. In a heated dialogue, a slim majority of commissioners ignored department staff, the Agency’s director, and the minority vote, to issue a narrow directive for rulemaking that will ...
