Colorado BHA Winter 2024 Newsletter

As 2024 came to a close, Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers looked back on a year of many successes. We mobilized supporters and allies to defeat the Prop 127 ballot initiative, which would have banned mountain lion hunting and–as importantly–challenged time-tested principles of science-based wildlife management (more on that win below). ...

CO BHA Chapter Newsletter Spring 2024

“One swallow does not make a summer, but one skein of geese, cleaving the murk of March thaw, is the spring.”  -Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac   There’s no other organization like Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Need proof? Take a look at the highlights from the 2023 member survey. What other group boasts a membership that relies on public land 90% of their time afield; eats wild game weekly (50%); is mostly younger (76% under age 54); and–perhaps most amazing in this polarized age–is ...

CO Chapter Newsletter Fall 2023

“A world in which a sacramental portion of food can be taken in an old way—hunting, fishing, farming and gathering—has as much to do with societal sanity as a day's work for a day's pay.” – Tom McGuane, “The Heart of the Game,” Outside, September 1977 Welcome to autumn! We’re keeping this newsletter short because, well, September. September is also Public Lands Month, with national Public Lands Day just around the corner on September 23. There are still some great opportunities to give back ...

Colorado Chapter Newsletter Summer 2023

For Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, summer also means stewardship. Colorado BHA Winter Newsletter

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Colorado Chapter Newsletter Winter 2022 “Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” – Gary Snyder[1] Recently, I found myself in a vegetarian restaurant in New York City, having dinner with a group of co-workers. A number of them are vegetarian or vegan. None of them had ever been hunting. Talk turned to my own recent hunts, and from there to the importance of knowing where one’s food comes from and even more pedestrian details about processing an animal from ...

Colorado BHA Fall Newsletter 2022

“To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.” – Aldo Leopold  With shorter days and cooler nights, many of us will be looking forward to days spent on the hunt—hopefully in one of those blank places on the map Leopold so valued. Leopold knew, like many Backcountry Hunters & Anglers’ members, that the “blank places” are where you find solitude and challenge. They are where humanity’s footprint is light, and by extension where ...
