The Last Chicken

Author: Tom Reed
By Tom Reed That morning Duane shared the land with me. It was his place. Had been his place, his family’s place year after year after year. Sure, it was public land, but it felt like it had another stamp, a generational one. I felt honored. Deeply. We set out in different directions. Duane and Duke the setter going one way. Me with my entire pack another. I walked and followed. A light breeze came off the ocean into canine noses and I followed some more. Walking. Always walking, the sun ...

Author: Colorado BHA
DENVER, COLORADO — Sportsmen from Colorado and beyond today applauded the state of Colorado for moving to protect traditional, fair chase hunting by curbing the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) to pursue wildlife. Earlier today, the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission voted to make Colorado the first state where hunting tradition and fair chase are protected from civilian use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) for hunting. “As North America’s first conservationists, hunters have a ...

Defending Fair Chase: Banning Drones for Hunting or Scouting

Author: Wyoming BHA
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (commonly called “drones”) are increasingly important in the military and have high potential to contribute to the fields of wildlife biology, search-and-rescue, agriculture and many other applications. However, in private hands there is small but growing interest in using these highly sophisticated remote-controlled aircraft to scout, stalk and hunt big game. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers believes this technology represents a widespread opportunity for abuse, ...

Western Colorado Sportsmen Speak-up for Non-Motorized Habitat & Hunting

In Colorado, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently making decisions which will direct the management of thousands of acres of public land on the Western Slope by updating Resource Management Plans (RMP) in the Grand Junction and Domiguez-Escalante Districts.  Sportsmen understand that to ensure that this area continues to produce healthy populations of wildlife, and thus quality hunting opportunities, it's crucial that large tracts of non-motorized habitat be maintained.  In the ...

Hunting & Fishing: A Vital Connection between People and Nature

Author: Tim Brass
Yesterday, in an address to the National Parks Conservation Association newly appointed Secretary of Interior Sally Jewel exclaimed that "There is a growing disconnect between people and nature, and this group understands we need to do something about that.” We couldn’t agree more, Secretary Jewel. As hunters and anglers who celebrate the great American tradition of testing personal boundaries amid the solitude of the wilds, we certainly understand the threats that a growing reliance on ...

Filet de Ruddy Duck

Author: Tim Brass
Sure it looks strange, doesn’t fly unless it has to and is generally regarded by hunters as the slightly better looking sister of the American Coot (aptly named by waterfowlers “Fulica Americana” (fool duck)). But did you know that the Ruddy Duck’s flavor was historically regarded second only to the Canvasback and Redheads, or as Hank Shaw puts it, “the original butterball? If only I had known this when I was 13, my uncles would have been quite proud of their nephew’s frequent harvest. While ...

Montana BHA Member Engaged while Elk Hunting

Montana BHA Member, Kim Blakowski shot her first elk and got engaged all in the same outing. This is her story. 4:30 AM....we’re up, dressed, fed, horses are saddled and we are off – chasing the elusive elk.  My boyfriend Chris and I are setting-out on horseback, rifles in hand, hoping that we’ll need the horses to pack an elk out for us. This is my second year hunting elk and so far I have been unsuccessful in prior bow and rifle seasons. As we work our way up the mountain the terrain ...

Faces of BHA: Brad Brooks

The following is the first in a series of posts which highlight the lives of the boots-on-the-ground members that make-up Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Brad Brooks, Age 30, Boise, ID What’s your favorite style of hunting or fishing? Style to me is a question of how you approach hunting, not necessarily the type of weapon one chooses, which is typically how hunters define themselves. My style of hunting combines my passion for climbing, adventure and exploration. I seek out the places where ...

Reading for Conservation

Author: Ken Theis
By BHA's Utah Coordinator, Ken Theis.   One of the main things required of graduate students, regardless of the field of study, is to read. Exposed to a vast amount of information, you are expected to notice when various thoughts, ideas, and information begin to mesh. Once-held beliefs may be discarded, others reinforced, emerging ideas adopted. Sorted, sifted, and mulled over, somehow it all converges into what you take to be true. Certain authors may be particularly influential and you ...
