Local view: Keep public land for recreation

Help BHA keep public lands public. By David LienDuluth News Tribune: 7/17/14In 1887 Theodore Roosevelt founded the Boone and Crockett Club with fellow sportsmen. The group later became Roosevelt’s brain trust of “hunter-conservationists” during his presidential crusade to preserve habitat for elk, deer, buffalo and other species among America’s vast wild places and wide-open spaces. Roosevelt’s work as a “conservation president” was one of many ways he left lasting ...

Transferring Federal Public Lands to States: Bad for Hunters and Anglers

As a big game hunter who (like over 90% of Colorado sportsmen) hunts public lands, the recent push by some elected officials and big-industry groups to transfer our federal public lands to state ownership, or to sell them off outright to private interests, is more than a little troubling. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that long ago (during the Bush administration years) that similar shenanigans were taking place: former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) introduced a bill requiring the federal ...

As you are likely aware, it was a fellow veteran, Theodore Roosevelt, who is responsible for much of the great public lands inheritance and heritage that Americans enjoy today. In 1887, Roosevelt founded the Boone and Crockett Club with fellow sportsmen. As explained by American Hunter contributor Mike Fuljenz, this group later became Roosevelt’s brain trust of ...

The Wallowa-Whitman: A National Forest Begging for a Travel Management Plan

By Brian JenningsWhen the U.S. Forest Service was formed in 1905, it was charged with managing our public forests for the greater good of all.  We all own them and have a right to use them.  But the Forest Service is also charged with protecting the natural resources in our forests, and sometimes that means policy decisions don’t square with the wishes of everyone.  A prime example concerns off-road travel on public lands in Northeast Oregon.  Those who prefer OHV travel in the forests often ...

Guest Opinion: Conserve Habitat Now Instead of Politicizing Sage Grouse

Author: Greg Munther
By Ed Arnett and Greg Munther The forthcoming decision on listing the greater sage grouse under the Endangered Species Act has sparked controversy, fear and anger among Westerners. As expected, legislators are politicizing the issue — and not necessarily for the greater good. Reps. Steve Daines of Montana and Cory Gardner of Colorado recently joined other members of Congress to introduce legislation that would delay the listing for 10 years. In Utah, legislators decided to use $2 million of ...

Fishing the Backcountry

Author: Grant Alban
By Grant Alban   If you’re like me (or shhh, my wife), you often have trouble pulling fish out of big rivers.  Here in western Montana there is no shortage of great trout water (or so I’m told) – and that certainly seems to be the case…for others.  I’m not a novice angler.  I do occasionally catch fish when I go out and I have had some good days, but ususally they aren’t so good.  I can read water and I understand where fish should be holding, but often times, most times, I don’t catch ...
