The worst/best Christmas gift

Author: Grant Alban
By BHA Development Associate, Grant Alban   I was twelve, almost thirteen years old and it was Christmas time.  Having learned long ago that Santa wasn’t real, I passed the stage of wanting a million presents under the tree on Christmas morning.  Now I only wanted one really cool gift, and in my case, that was a gun.  As I grew up, my parents always seemed a little miffed at how their only son,   who lived in the suburbs of Southern California, could be so into guns and hunting.  Sure, my ...

Fishing the Backcountry

Author: Grant Alban
By Grant Alban   If you’re like me (or shhh, my wife), you often have trouble pulling fish out of big rivers.  Here in western Montana there is no shortage of great trout water (or so I’m told) – and that certainly seems to be the case…for others.  I’m not a novice angler.  I do occasionally catch fish when I go out and I have had some good days, but ususally they aren’t so good.  I can read water and I understand where fish should be holding, but often times, most times, I don’t catch ...

Ethics: Sharing Our Public Lands

Author: Grant Alban
By BHA Development Associate, Grant Alban.   Even as I begin to write this, I’m still not sure what I should have done. Everyone has different opinions about what’s right and what’s wrong. How can someone else who considers himself to be ethical feel differently about a situation than I do, when I too, consider myself ethical? I don’t have an answer for that question, but it seems that the most I can ask from my fellow sportsmen is that when they face an ethical dilemma, they do their best ...

Shout-out to my gear: “What up, Gear!”

Author: Grant Alban
By BHA Development Associate, Grant Alban   With an elk and an antelope in my freezer, the sun began to set on my hunting season. The last two days I did give in to a mildly frantic desperation that had me trying to fill my deer tag – but alas, nothing. Back in my garage that Sunday night, I emptied my hunting pack with some relief. Hunting was over for the year. The thing that I had looked forward to for so long had come and gone – but with it came sleeping in, fewer stops at the gas ...
