Montana BHA Responds to '454' Program Changes

We have long encouraged FWP to improve the 454 agreements, including most recently at March’s EQC meeting and in an oped published by one of our board members, Jake Schwaller. Some of our suggestions included a cap on these agreements (which are currently unlimited) and to move up the application process to time these with the existing landowner permit allocations and draws. Senate Bill Would Greenlight Sale of Public Lands Out of Public Hands

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), joined by his colleagues Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and John Barrasso (R-WY), announced in early April the introduction of the HOUSES Act (S. 4062), legislation that would permit state or local governments to buy public lands on the cheap, ostensibly to address diminished housing supply and rising housing costs.  Sen. The hunters had accessed the public lands in question for two consecutive years, utilizing a stepladder in the second year to cross from one public parcel to another.    For more background on corner crossing, check ...

New Pine Tree agreement benefits public and wildlife

We didn’t really need a reason to celebrate on St. Patrick’s Day, but public land hunters in Arkansas can raise a toast to a long-term management agreement for the Pine Tree Research Station WDA. During the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission’s monthly meeting on March 17, Commissioners authorized Director Austin Booth to sign a 10-year cooperative agreement with the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture for the Pine Tree Research Station WDA. BHA continues to track litigation over hunting and fishing opportunities on national wildlife refuges, including reports that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is engaged in discussions with the Center for Biological Diversity.   We’ve always supported the expansion of public hunting and fishing access on National Wildlife Refuge System lands and waters, for many years and across multiple administrations, and we remain strongly opposed to any actions that would diminish the expansion of ...
