PA hunters and anglers unite to protect funds for land and water

In late November, the Pennsylvania Chapter of Backcountry Hunters joined a coalition of hunting and angling groups to speak as one against proposed budget cuts that would have permanently altered funding for public land, clean water and a host of programs that benefit outdoor initiatives.  Led by our friends at the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, we were joined in opposition to the measures by the American Woodcock Society, Chesapeake Council of Fly Fishers International, ...

Pennsylvania Deer Hunters: Report Your Harvest to Support Deer Management

By Aaron Hepler Tis the season of the orange army! It’s the time of year when Pennsylvania sees its largest number of hunters hit the woods - all at the same time. It’s a nostalgic time of year, and may as well be a holiday in Pennsylvania. The PA rifle opener is here.  Some hunters will take to the woods, adding to their history of seasons afield. Many hunters this year are new and just learning the ropes. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that people’s love for the outdoors - hunting, ...

Timely reminders as hunting season arrives in Pennsylvania

Comprehensive knowledge of hunting regulations is every hunter’s independent responsibility. Thankfully, we have modern technology at our fingertips telling us anything we want to know. Emphasis should be placed on updating yourself on new regulations every year! Who knows? The knowledge could potentially save you from an empty game bag - or protect you from an unwanted citation.   By Aaron Hepler A cool, misty September evening found a friend of mine in his tree stand on public land in the ...

Pennsylvania mentoring programs just the ticket to get new hunters afield

By Aaron Hepler Pennsylvania is a state known for deep hunting traditions, a high hunter population, and, unfortunately, no Sunday hunting. After years of following this seemingly set-in-stone rule, Pennsylvania recently scored an awesome win - three Sundays per year to legally hunt. Similar to this fight is another fight - for growth in the ranks of hunters and fishermen in Pennsylvania. I grew up in a family that hunted and fished their hearts out. We didn’t own video games or cell phones ...

Pennsylvania: BHA vs. CWD encourages hunters to get deer tested

Hunters are needed in the fight against Chronic Wasting Disease. Increased harvesting and testing of deer in CWD areas is crucial to halting its spread. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has released its new CWD management plan. Its core components are hunter participation along with increased hunting opportunities. An increased number of DMAP permits along with regular antlerless tag allocations have been made available to encourage hunters to harvest more deer and submit them for ...

Become a hunting mentor with Pennsylvania Take Two Program

As part of its effort to recruit new folks to hunting and make lifelong hunters out of them, Pennsylvania BHA has created the Take Two campaign.  PA BHA recognizes that simply recruiting new hunters and offering them a one-time or short-term introduction to hunting may not be enough to help beginners get over the hump to becoming a dedicated, lifelong hunter. What really helps someone become a hunter is having a reliable mentor who can assist in various ways over a season or several ...

Pennsylvania's elk are thriving; License apps close July 31

By Aaron Hepler When a conversation steers to elk hunting in a northeastern state like PA, it doesn’t hold the robust popularity of western states. Many non-resident hunters, or even general public for that matter, have no idea that PA holds the largest elk herd in the northeast. Let me tell you, we’ve got some biggins! By the 1870s elk were considered extirpated from Pennsylvania. With the creation of the Pennsylvania Game Commission in 1895, elk began to be a focus of concern. Beginning in ...

PA BHA: E-bikes appropriate for motorized routes only on public land

The increased popularity of e-bikes has created new demand for areas to ride on public lands in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Chapter acknowledges that e-bikes, like other forms of motorized transportation, can serve as a useful tool for hunters, anglers and other recreationists when used responsibly and legally.  E-bikes, which incorporate motors, allow the rider to travel at faster speeds and greater distances than traditional mountain bikes, and they have different patterns and ...
