Oregon BHA Fights Misguided Legislation of Elk Management

The west has seen a rash of legislation attempting to expand the ability of private interests to manage elk herds. Instead of deferring to the biologists, land managers and agencies tasked with sustaining healthy cervid populations, several Oregon legislators chose to draft bills that would erode management authority for Oregon's elk. One bill, SB 301, is progressing through the legislature despite dangerously vague terms and little to no assurance of mutual benefit to Oregon’s Elk or the ...

BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 47: Drew Phipps, mussel biologist and upland hunter

Growing up in a coal mining, fishing and hunting family in Dickinson County, Virginia, the heart of coal country, Drew Phipps spent his early days along the Clinch River, wading, swimming, observing and finding what became his life’s path as a freshwater mussel biologist. Why should this be? Why would ...

Your Backcountry: San Juan Wilderness

Author: David Lien
Renowned elk hunter (and Colorado BHA founder) David Petersen describes, in his book A Man Made of Elk, a bugling bull as “an otherworldly music … like a calamitous crescendo of bluesy high notes blown on a saxophone, proclaiming a wildness we can only imagine.” David lives (and hunts) in southwest Colorado’s San Juan Mountains—home to more land above 10,000 feet in elevation than any other mountainous region in the contiguous 48 states. I’ve also been privileged to hunt elk in the San ...

BHA's official public comment in support of clean waters

The complexity of our watersheds and the extent of their connectivity needs to be appreciated if we hope to have viable and healthy habitat across our landscape. Hunters and anglers understand this. Those who spend any amount of time on our wild lands and waters understand this. So, when the current administration proposed rolling back clean water protections under the Clean Water Act for roughly 50% of our wetlands and 18% of our streams we spoke up and our community stood beside us.
