Kansas State University Celebrates Public Lands Month

On September 28, 2019, the Kansas State University Backcountry Hunters & Anglers club hosted a Public Land Clean-up at Pillsbury Crossing Wildlife Area. This project was in coordination with the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism to remove trash from within and along Deep Creek. Because this area is so close to Manhattan, and is easily accessible, over the years it has become a well known party spot. Nine members from BHA at Kansas State and the Wildlife Society met at the ...

OPINION: Support Montana Headwaters Security Act to protect wild, scenic rivers

Originally published in the Missoulian I am the son, grandson and great-grandson of timber men and ranchers in the Flathead Valley. My family came to Montana in the '30s to capitalize on the vast richness of opportunity, to raise a large family and live in a place that was like no other. Earning a living on private and public lands in and around this valley lent itself to free time being spent hunting lands and fishing the rivers and lakes that flow through and dot the landscape. Shared Stewardship

Author: Tyler Ross
“Many hands make light work”. When these words were penned in the 1324 cult classic Bevis of Hampton, folks may have scoffed at it. Or they could have loved it. Who knows? But what I do know is that now days, those words ring truer and truer. On September 25, 2019, The United States Department of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service and United Forest Service entered into a Shared Stewardship Agreement with the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, North Carolina ...

Pennsylvania Take Two campaign: A Hunter Mentorship Program

As part of its efforts to recruit new folks to hunting and make lifelong hunters out of them, Pennsylvania BHA is launching the Take Two campaign. PA BHA recognizes that simply recruiting new hunters and offering them a one-time or short-term introduction to hunting may not be enough to help beginners get over the hump to becoming a dedicated, lifelong hunter. What really helps someone become a hunter is having a reliable mentor who can assist in various ways over a season or several ...

Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Appoint CPW State Trust Lands Liaison

Author: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers recently appointed Liz Rose to serve as Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) State Trust Lands Liaison. Liz was born and raised in the California Coast Range and was lucky to live in the hills of the relatively small (by Bay Area standards) town of Los Gatos with a park behind her house. “I spent a lot of time running around on deer trails under oak trees, and through poison oak, unfortunately,” she said. “We had a garden and orchard, would ...

Physical Fitness as part of Ethical Hunting

Photo by Alex Kim   This article first appeared in the Fall 2019 issue of Backcountry Journal. Join BHA and get the journal, quarterly, in your mailbox. By Corey Ellis While recently rereading Beyond Fair Chase by Jim Posewitz, the founder of Orion and a conservation legend and expert in hunting ethics, I was struck by a section that had not caught my attention before; the section was titled, "Physical Fitness as a Part of Preparation." Although we often think of fitness in preparation ...
