Take Action: Help the BLM Refine Proposed Action for Left Coulee Access

Author: Montana BHA
The BLM is proposing to create and open a Left Coulee Access Road, a 0.6-mile primitive route that would provide legal motorized access to a network of 51 miles of motorized roads through the 90,000-acre Bullwacker area, at the heart of some of the wildest, undeveloped chunks of land in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Our members care deeply about this area as it touts exceptional habitat for - and opportunities to hunt - a multitude of wild game, including elk, mule deer, ...

FWP seeks members to serve on Mule Deer Citizens Advisory Council

Author: Montana BHA
Ask any Montana hunter, and they’ll have a different response on the state of our mule deer herds and mule deer hunting. There’s certainly no shortage of complaints, nor ideas on what to do about it. Along those lines, FWP is looking for members of a to-be-formed mule deer citizens advisory council. The goal of the group is to identify expectations for a new mule deer plan and reach consensus among members on what solutions could look like to address declining mule deer herds and growing ...

FWP Hosting Meetings to Discuss Upland Game Bird Regs

Author: Montana BHA
Are upland game bird regulations about to be flipped on their head? Not exactly. Current proposals include nothing drastic. But FWP’s decision to host two meetings - and reminding the public that the Commission can make amendments to current proposals - signals other concerns that haven’t yet been addressed. We’ve heard from hunters, both residents and non, that the bird hunting opportunities they covet are becoming harder to find in Montana. There’s a growing concern over commercial bird ...

Roundup man's hunting privileges revoked for 10 years after elk poaching

Author: Montana BHA
What began as a sweeping prosecution for three bull elk poached in Musselshell County ended last month with a conviction for a single elk killed out of season and a man's hunting privileges revoked for 10 years. Earl Russell Benes, 27, was convicted at trial in 2021 of poaching a single bull elk, despite, according to charging documents, admitting to shooting three elk out of season from a vehicle in two shootings a few days apart in 2019. On Dec. 18, District Court Judge Randal ...

Smith River 2024 - What you need to know

Author: Montana BHA
The application season for the prized Smith River float permits is now open, and things look a little different this year. 1) Non-residents are now limited to 10% of the launch permits, which start and end at Montana State Parks. This constitutes a big shift in permit allocations from previous years. Take last year for example, when 14,497 people applied for 1,470 launch permits; 39% of these were awarded to non-residents. In theory, this 10% cap change should give Montana resident ...

Fish and Wildlife Commission nixes quota ranges for trophy-hunting districts

Author: Montana BHA
The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission voted this week to scrap quota ranges in trophy-hunting districts, a decision that drew criticism from hunters concerned about politics steering the allocation of tags.  The commission’s unanimous decision came during the latter half of an eight-hour meeting on Thursday where the commission adopted regulations to guide Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks’ management of big game species over the next two years. Quotas are a tool game managers use to ...
