Two in the Far North by Margaret Murie

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists Sen. Martin Heinrich recommended this book to the BHA staff, and it has since become one of my favorites. In an incredibly moving memoir, Margaret “Mardy” Murie transports us back in time to the turn of the 20th century in Alaska, where the journey begins on the Tanana River and then to Fairbanks where she spent her childhood. We float along the Koyukuk River as she marries Olaus Murie, a ...

Introducing the Public Land Owner Stewardship Fund: Five Clubs Receive Funding for Local Stewardship Projects

BHA often touts the boots-on-the-ground, grassroots efforts of our organization and perhaps nothing embodies this more than the stewardship efforts of our college clubs. As collective owners of millions of acres of public land throughout North America it’s important that we take care of the land in the same way we care for our rifles, shotguns, and fly rods. Each year, clubs complete two work service projects in their local community. These projects build tangible field skills, leadership, ...

Student Leaders Step Up and Help Pass the Great American Outdoors Act

Today, the House passed the Great American Outdoors Act with a 310-107 vote. It now makes its way to the President's desk for a final signature. BHA members across the U.S. made their voices heard including many of our student leaders. Amid navigating summer jobs with long and odd hours, students found the time to submit videos, make phone calls, post on social media, speak on our live Crowdcast events, and most importantly call their representatives.  It's not always easy to speak up, but ...

NC State Club Vice President Creates Film "Why America Needs Hunting Now: Does Hunting Help Conservation?"

Torey Vayer does not identify herself as a hunter or angler. She does, however, consider herself a conservationist. Torey grew up in Rockville, Maryland where a love of animals and the outdoors led her to Penn State University to pursue a degree in Biology and a minor in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. It was there that she came to understand the important contributions hunters and anglers make to wildlife management, both financially and on the ground. But for those who are not immersed ...
