1/17/20 NMDGF Game Commission Recap

Author: Joel Gay
After Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham dismissed the best game commission chair we've ever had – Joanna Prukop – NM BHA specifically asked that Prukop's replacement be just as qualified. We were disappointed, however, when the Game Commission met last Friday in Las Cruces and the new commissioner was seated. Sharon Salazar Hickey is a Los Alamos attorney who has no experience in wildlife management and doesn’t hunt or fish, which we believe should be the minimum qualifications to oversee the $40 ...

Kansas Chapter Welcomes 2020

Welcome to 2020.  What a first year this has been for Kansas BHA!  Pint Nights all over the state, booths at conventions and shows, Beer Bands and Public Lands, and on and on. But even more exciting is the year we have coming up! This year we will have a bunch of projects in the field with Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism. Our members will help KDWPT game biologists and managers so they have more time to do the things they were actually trained to do. That translates to ...

Women and Hunting in Colorado

Author: Liz Rose
I feel lucky to say that my 2019 ended on a high note. I cooked Colorado pronghorn for six of my friends who all admitted, with surprise in their voices after that thoughtful first-taste silence, that it tasted amazing- and way better than they’d expected. If you’ve ever carefully prepared wild game for non-hunters, you know how that feels. This was within days of harvesting my first pronghorn ever, which also happened to be my first big game animal in Colorado after three seasons of ...

How To Make A Smoked Ham With Wild Game

Author: James Hasley
Whether a grizzled veteran hunter or relatively new to pursuing sustenance from the backcountry, we share a common desire for comradery and to impart our experiences to others. While some endeavors are best undertaken in solitude, the foundation of the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is reliant on the efforts of sportsmen and women in passing along their experiences to ensure the future of hunting, and thereby assure the continued support for our wild places and wild creatures. ...

Colorado Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Set Up Camp At International Sportsmen’s Expo

Author: David Lien
The Colorado chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA) started off 2020 with a bang, if not shotgun blast volley, by setting up camp at the International Sportsmen’s Expo (ISE) in Denver during January and spreading the word about BHA’s wildlands and wildlife conservation efforts (and other work) across Colorado, the country and continent. The chapter had a booth at the ISE from Thursday, January 9, through Sunday, January 12, which was spearheaded by our Colorado Parks & Wildlife ...

Learn to Hunt: An Ohio Success Story

Antillio and I met two years ago at a "Learn To Hunt" event put on by the Ohio Chapter of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers. Little did I know it at the time, but one of my most memorable hunts would be a product of this event. I had come as a volunteer, wanting to give back, meet new people, and do my part to increase hunter recruitment. What drew me to Antillio was his open mind and willingness to learn. Whenever I encounter someone with these traits it's easy to invest my time as you can tell ...
