2000 Miles Film Tour

Every waterfowler dreams of following the waterfowl flyway and chasing the winter migration with his or her trusty shotgun and faithful retriever. Ducks and geese follow ancient pathways from their breeding grounds to wintering areas. Each fall, millions of waterfowl migrate south to warmer regions in search of food and habitat. We don't know for certain how ducks and geese navigate during migration, but scientists believe the birds take cues from the position of the sun and moon, as well ...

Vietnamese Venison Pho

Text and Photos by Oliver Classen and Jacob Lam Winter is a time for heavy stews and roasts that keep you feeling full and primed for bitter winds, but we are entering a lighter, brighter season. Pho is a perfect dish for this transition. Hot broth and sliced steak will keep you cozy enough to brave a couple more March snowstorms or cold rains, but aromatic mint and finely cut scallions are a harbinger for more hospitable weather. Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

This title is part of BHA's Jim Posewitz Digital Library: Required Reading for Conservationists   Outwardly, Braiding Sweetgrass appears to be a book about plants, viewed through Dr. Kimmerer’s own tandem lens of her degree in botany and Anishinaabe traditional environmental knowledge. Indeed, she weaves these different ways of seeing the world together as tenderly as she describes the eponymous braiding of sweetgrass, but I’d be doing us all a disservice to imply this book is just a ...

Author: Joel Gay
An all-out ban on public lands trapping throughout New Mexico known as the “Wildlife Conservation & Public Safety Act” inched closer Friday night when the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in favor, 5-1. But now,  "time" is on trappers’ side. SB32 now goes to the full Senate for approval. If the bill passes, it still must get through one or more House committees and a vote by the full House. With the Legislature scheduled to adjourn in just two weeks, that schedule will be tough to ...

PA's Middle Creek WMA : Magical migrations and hunting opportunities

By Aaron Hepler   As I sat in the bay window of my parents’ house, I couldn’t help but notice the light was fading. It was odd since it was sunny a few minutes prior. I looked up at the sky as the shadows grew. The image of hundreds and hundreds of geese met my eyes. Snow geese and Canada geese alike, with other species of waterfowl in the mix. Landing in fields and taking to the air at random times, birds covered the ground and sky wherever I could see. This was a familiar sight for me and ...
