Compounding Damage with Destruction on a North Carolina River

During the deluge of Hurricane Helene, over 30 inches of rain fell in the headwaters of the iconic Nolichucky River in North Carolina, falling on ground already saturated from prior rain. The Nolichucky crested nine feet higher than its record flood levels, wiping out almost everything in its path. Although the river experienced scouring and erosion, it was the man-made infrastructure that fared the worst. Among the losses were almost 40 miles of railroad tracks owned by CSX ...

Public Lands Firings Hurt Hunters and Anglers

Late last week the Trump administration fired more than 5,000 federal employees within the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service (totaling 10% of the USFS staff). The firings were done without regard for staff roles or performance, but rather targeted individuals with "probationary status" who were hired or switched federal jobs within the last year, as well as veterans hired through non-competitive processes within the last two years. This is a devastating blow to the ...

On Base: Creek Restoration in Historic Habitat

On a damp October morning away from the noise of I-5 and life's usual distractions, a group of volunteers huddle near a white canopy. Braving the cold, they wait to hear the plan for the day of work they had sacrificed their Saturday for. Most everyone here has a direct association with the base, but few know that Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is home to the largest expanse of glacial outwash prairie. Out of all historical prairies of this nature, only 5% still exist, almost all of which ...

BLM proposes sale of parcels in Nebraska

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is revising its land use plan in Nebraska, potentially opening nearly all of its 5,100 acres for sale. These parcels, primarily 40 to 80 acres each, are scattered across the western two-thirds of the state and have been federally owned since the Homestead era. BLM Field Manager Chad Krause noted that many of the parcels are not easily accessible to the public without permission from adjacent landowners, reducing its public value. The Nebraska BHA chapter ...

Hunting and Angling Presidents

By Dalton Valette   To celebrate this year’s Presidents’ Day, let’s look at the long history of America’s heads of state who enjoyed the great outdoors. For us, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, one mustachioed man may come to mind, but there have been plenty of other hunters and anglers who’ve resided in the White House.   George Washington (1st president, 1789-1797)  Throughout his illustrious career as a surveyor, farmer, soldier, and president, Washington enjoyed a great amount of time ...
