Alaska Roadless Habitat Conserved, Local Economies Boosted in USDA Plan

MISSOULA, Mont. – Backcountry roadless lands in the Tongass National Forest, a public lands crown jewel in southeast Alaska, will see conservation safeguards restored and new measures put in place under a U.S. Department of Agriculture approach to boost the region’s economy, support local communities and conserve priceless natural resources. USDA’s Southeast Alaska Sustainability Strategy will end large-scale old-growth timber sales in the Tongass, focusing management practices instead on ...

Wildlife Refuge Conservation & Recreation for the Community Act

H.R. 972 The Wildlife Refuge Conservation & Recreation for the Community Act If you have ever been to Western Riverside County in Southern California, you might not believe that a 500,000 acre plan to support wildlife habitat and migration corridors could be possible in this rapidly developing area. You may also be surprised to learn that there is a plan to establish a new National Wildlife Refuge in the region that could add 150,000 acres of public land which one day could be open to ...

There is still work yet to do on Sunday hunting regulations in NC, but BHA's North Carolina chapter is celebrating a significant win for access and opportunity. Members are coming together again as the country moves beyond Covid. Hyper-local, member-led NC BHA groups are called Councils. New Hampshire BHA Leadership Team Comments on Bear Brook State Park Land Management Plan

The New England Chapter’s New Hampshire State Leadership Team recently submitted final comments on Bear Brook State Park’s revised management plan.  At nearly 10,000 acres, Bear Brook State Park is one of the largest state parks in New Hampshire. In 2019, the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources initiated a revision of the park’s management plan, which was last updated in 1994. Members from BHA’s NH State Leadership Team participated in several public meetings during the process. ...

A National Park Goat Hunt

Photo: NPS/Simon Weller   BY ZACH WELLER   “Hey Trav, I think I see a mountain goat. Take out your 15s and see if you can confirm.” We were still in the canoes, just 20 minutes into our five-day trip into the Tetons, when Travis pulled up his binoculars and replied, “Yup, that looks like a goat.” Photo: NPS/Lauren Klamm Six weeks prior I received an email that read: “You and your team have been selected to participate in Grand Teton National Park’s non-native mountain goat cull.” I had to ...

Hunting For Experience: At BHA’s North American Rendezvous

Author: David Lien
In a March 2014 Colorado Outdoors story (“Hunting For Experience”), I surmised that “hunting is a quest for knowledge and wonder as much as a pursuit of game.”[1] If that’s true, then hunting can (in part) be defined as a unique and irreplaceable subset of everyday life, a harvest of knowledge and wonder. As renowned trad bow elk hunter David Petersen says in his book Heartsblood, “In real hunting, a microcosm of life itself, the trip is the destination.”[2] Which brings up a larger ...

Rhode Island BHA Oppose Aquaculture Lease that Threatens Hunting Opportunities

In April of 2020, two Little Compton brothers applied for a lease to establish a commercial oyster growing operation in the tidal waters adjacent to Sapowet Marsh Wildlife Management Area in Tiverton, Rhode Island. The state agency that manages aquaculture, the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council, proceeded to review and work towards approval of the application with little scrutiny from the public. In June, approval of the lease appeared imminent, but was delayed because the ...

NM Game Commission Awaits New Appointees

Author: Joel Gay
State Game Commission member Gail Cramer, of Mayhill, unexpectedly resigned this week. It comes just months after the sudden death of Commissioner David Soules, of Las Cruces, which means Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham now has two commissioners to appoint. We hope the governor will choose well-rounded replacements who represent all New Mexico hunters and anglers, and to avoid the urge to appoint individuals based solely on their political value. After Lujan Grisham was elected in 2018, NM BHA ...
