Author: Dan Wilson
Update: Despite overwhelming opposition from BHA and other hunting and wildlife conservation groups, on November 19th the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission voted 4-4 to postpone the 2022 spring bear hunt (the tie vote effectively closes the spring bear hunting season). BHA remains supportive of a spring bear hunting season and is extremely disappointed in the commission's decision.  ------------------------------------------ Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA), the voice ...

Chris was born in Columbus, Georgia, but raised outside of Dothan, Alabama. “I grew up on a family peanut farm,” he explained. “I spent a large part of my time as a child fishing for catfish and hunting squirrels. BHA Podcast & Blast, Ep. 117: Undercover Game Warden Tony Latham

Tony Latham is a retired game warden with 25 years’ experience working undercover on some of Idaho’s wildest public lands and in pursuit of some of the West’s nastiest wildlife criminals. Undercover work is a total immersion in a subculture: of cheap alcohol and casual violence, dive bars and broken people, slaughtered fish and wildlife, and coldly professional violators. The job exacts its own price, and nobody could ever say they do it for the pay. It’s only for the truly committed, those ...

BHA Member Reports Illegal E-bike Hunters

Author: Jeff Barney
All Americans have a right to enjoy our public lands and waters – but no small minority has a right to damage those public treasures or ruin the experience of others enjoying the Great Outdoors. Many of us can tell stories of stalks ruined, peace and quiet shattered and pack strings spooked by illegal off-road vehicles. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers member Jeff Barney found himself in one such situation earlier this year while hunting in a non-motorized area of the Salmon-Challis National ...

Why Hunt Rocky Mountain Elk? (Part II)

Author: David Lien
For someone who grew up hunting whitetails in northern Minnesota, making the transition to Rocky Mountain elk hunting was no small task. Although there are some similarities, for the most part elk hunting is an entirely different ballgame. Accomplished elk hunter and conservationist Randy Newberg is a Minnesota transplant (to Montana) too. “Growing up, I thought you had to be a millionaire to go elk hunting,” Randy said (in the 8/2/19 Outdoor News). “I want people to know that’s not true. ...

Say No to High Fence Game Farms in Alberta

Author: Neil Keown
Recent reports suggest that the Alberta government and certain municipalities, at the request of lobbyists for Alberta game farms, are considering legalizing “cervid hunting preserves” - that is, pay-to-hunt ranches. We urge our members to voice their opposition to these measures for the following reasons:  Game farms and high-fence ranches are potential vectors of wildlife diseases, including chronic wasting disease (CWD). CWD is a prion disease of the same family as BSE (“mad cow disease”) ...
