Arkansas BHA Chapter / Monday, October 25, 2021 / Categories: Media Help BHA Protect the Boundary Waters Every year more dedicated backcountry hunters, anglers and outdoor enthusiasts visit the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness than any wilderness area in the country. The BWCAW offers an array of outdoor opportunities, ranging from phenomenal fishing for lake trout, smallmouth bass, pike and walleye in its seemingly endless string of quiet waters to unique backcountry hunts for white-tailed deer, black bear and grouse in its vast tracts of unpressured forest land. The Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service are in the process of applying for a 20-year moratorium on mining on federal public lands in the watershed upstream of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. This process includes a 90-day comment period for the public to weigh in on the proposal. The Boundary Waters is the most visited wilderness area in the United States. Proposed sulfide-ore copper mining would have disastrous impacts on this irreplaceable fish and wildlife habitat. Such an accessible outdoor opportunity for Americans to hunt, fish, and recreate must not be lost to irresponsible development. Join BHA in submitting your comment supporting the protection of the Boundary Waters so that future generations of sportsmen and women can enjoy this pristine wilderness.
